Pretty Funny & Close To Nail On Head!

If you haven't seen this yet, it's a poster that's going around Facebook at a pretty rampant pace. The first occupational poster that crossed my feed was, "Political Operative," which is pretty freekin' spot on for my "statehouse" friends. Tonight, I caught the pic above from a Greenville Realtor's page, which I thought was pretty funny.

First pic - Guilty as charged, admittedly (although, I can't hang out anymore). I'm not sure about pic #2, but I can see where they're coming from. Pic #3 is perfect, as syndication websites force Realtors to pay big money for information they got from us in the first place. Pic #4 is a perception that all Realtors flip. Pic #5 is exactly the type image I cast out for my Sunday open houses.

Ahhh....Pic #6! Some friends and clients recognize what happens behind the scenes, but most of the public doesn't see it. Perhaps this is a good thing.

At present, Amanda and I have scores of listings around Columbia, SC, and X "sides" under contract. Take a peek at pic #6 above, and think of the open house luncheons, open houses, three inspectors for each home under contract and the negotiations for each, pictures, offers, counteroffers, lock boxes, signs, painters, landscapers, boarded dogs, buyers schedules, sellers schedules, seller's baby's nap schedules, insurance quoters, dumbarsers, listing appointments, lender conditions, closing attorney demands, appraisals, contested appraisals, ad folks, phone calls from recruiting brokers, fellow Realtors, Realtor.com/Zillow.com/Homes.com/ColdwellBanker.com/CraigsList/Sign calls, "Will They Rent?" inquires that we field every day. Like the photo suggests, it's a load!!!

This all said, we wouldn't have it any other way. We love our job, and revel in the challenge every day presents. We try our best to be the ultimate hustler/pleaser Realtors that our clients expect.

I'm typing in jest, as the pic above is a fun snapshot of the balance between perception and true effort of what really goes on. As I mentioned in the last paragraph, we wouldn't have it any other way.

Greenville=Showplace, & Getting Better

As most readers of this blog know, it's hard for me to type about places other than Columbia, SC (perhaps because I rarely leave the city limits). After all, as a Realtor, I often feel like it's part of the job to be the front line of recruitment and retention. That said, I have to give credit when I see it.

This weekend Jennifer, Finley and I escaped to the Upstate to subtly celebrate our fifth wedding anniversary. Glad we did.

As I was looking for pics to share, I couldn't find any that do Greenville justice. With that, I thought I'd give props to a little part of what makes Greenville a happening place.

Before I do, however, let me be clear. We're big fans of Garibaldi's "Crispy Flounder," and everyone in Columbia knows, any tuna dish or Ribeye Mr. Friendly's brings out, is TOP shelf consuming: #DisclaimerNowTyped. Now, last night we enjoyed what is probably the best room service I've had to date. To be sure, I'm not incredibly well traveled, but you get the idea. The Lazy Goat is awesome!

This morning, the three of us strolled a few steps from our hotel, to High Cotton. Everything was, well, High Cotton... including the venue and service.

I'm proud of what the folks of Greenville, SC have accomplished. As a kid growing up in Anderson, I never in a million years (well, about 20ish) thought Greenville would become what it is today. My eyes have been opened, again.

Blog Love: One More Day For Shady Ln.

CBUR-Midtown Crushed January 2012

If you're on Facebook or Twitter, no doubt you've read that the world of real estate sales is experiencing an uptick. Who knows what's true these days, however, as we're all subject to so much fluff and spin, that sometimes we don't know the difference. That's OK, because just like in politics, all real estate is local.

I may not know what's going on with the rest of Earth's sales, but I'm well aware of what's going on within our real estate market. That said, the pic above is the 'Sales Board' of Coldwell Banker United's Midtown office for the month of January, 2012. #Impressive

To explain, the line items in the pic above are properties that received a written contract where a Realtor @ CBUR-Midtown is involved in the transaction, either as the Listing Realtor or Selling Realtor. Hopefully, my officemates and I can see these contracts to smooth closings, respectively.

Congrats to my fellow officemates and their Buyers and Sellers. This snapshot is a perfect microcosm of how CBUR-Midtown dominates the downtown Columbia, SC, real estate market.

Given the results above, I'm going to take a client recruitment liberty. Here goes: Coldwell Banker-Midtown has the best brand, best marketing, most hit-nationally branded website, enjoys the latest technology, employs the top producing Realtors in Columbia, dominates the downtown market share, and has started 2012 ON FIRE! In a sentence... if you're not using Coldwell Banker-Midtown to sell your house, then you are, for one reason or another, fighting what's happening around you. #JustSayin

No question, there are agents outside of CBUR-Midtown doing a nice business. All in all, however, I'm glad to be a part of the dominant office in the Midlands, as in my mind, activity generates activity. Further, I'm certain being with this group only adds to our practice/results.

Columbia's Newest MLS Listings: January, 2012
This edition of The Hotsheet seems to be a little inflated, as some sales folks like to use a trick where they re-list a property, hoping to put a "fresh face" on it. This method gives a property a new MLS#, and gets it back on The Hotsheet. As you can imagine, January is a natural fit for such a strategy.

I think everyone tries this method to some extent, but it seems to be compounded when the new year turns over for obvious reasons.

In short, there are more new listings on The HotSheet this month, than most others.

Druid Hills Has A New Flagship Sale :)

Friends and neighbors of Druid Hills will be ecstatic to learn that 2501 Craig Rd, 29204, closed the other day at $150,000. Yep... you read me right!

At 1,156 square feet, this 3 bed/1 bath home is full of goodies. While it doesn't have "granite," 2501 Craig is neat, clean, updated, and full of curb appeal (pic doesn't do justice). It also features cool outdoor stuff, like a big new barn and sprawling deck off the back.

Druid Hills is a small pocket of homes flanked by Harrison Rd, Forest Dr, and Beltline Blvd. Quoting my directions, "It's on the downtown side of Forest Acres. You know... behind Zesto's and Morganelli's." Most buyers respond to my verbal map with, "Oh, OK... I know where that is."

Over the years, we've done a pretty good business in this neighborhood, to be sure. I describe the area as, "A good fit for those who like the smaller Shandon/Melrose Heights style bungalow look, but don't want to pay for (or aren't ready for) a Shandon price point and for whatever reason don't prefer Rosewood." It's an ideal place for folks who want to live downtown "for less."

Congratulations to the buyer and seller of this cute corner lot home. Congrats to Druid Hills, too, as this transaction is a big deal for any property owner in the neighborhood. At $129-$130/ft, 2501 Craig Rd is the new flagship "comp," and will be used on most appraisals for the next 12 months.

Racquet, Balls, iPod, Wall. #Drenched!

Cinder-Block Wall Will Wear You Out @May's Park
This weekend we witnessed perhaps one of the greatest tennis matches of all time. Maybe not the best, but it was up there to be sure. After all, it's the first time I can remember going to bed watching a match, only to wake up watching the same contest. The match between JokerNole and Rafael Nadal was just under six hours of crazy speed and power. No matter who won, the event had everyone who knows competition shaking their heads.

It also solidified the fact that seemingly everyone has their own "nemesis." Djokovic is clearly Nadal's nemesis, as Nadal is Federer's. Bringing this notion down a few million levels, the tall green fella in the pic above is clearly mine.

There aren't too many tennis backboards in Columbia, SC. There's one at Heathwood Park, and an uneven/warped wooden one at Trenholm Park. They're all green, and all three whip me good and teach me patience.

Gold's Gym has tons of equipment, and Shandon may be the best place to run in The Midlands, but the most brutal yet fun workout for me is to go toe-to-toe with one of these walls. Most people don't think of this, but to swing at and chase a tennis ball for an hour with an iPod strapped on is as good a workout as you can find.

The iPod is key, as it's easy to get lost in the time, and before you know it, you're drenched, and your arm is about to fall off.

The only flaw in using tennis as your core sweat box is that it takes at least two to make it happen. These walls provide an exception, and when you finally realize it, it makes for a better workout than 90% of the matches most players play.

Hopefully we'll see more walls kick up around town. Who knows, maybe one day businesses will be able to sponsor tennis backboards. After all, they may be perfect little billboards waiting to happen. (Eureka!!!... I just stumbled onto another project/blog post!)

Time To Unhook Twitterfeed/Facebook.

Last year, I posted about a quandary that many active social media users endure; Should I set up my Tweets to automatically link to my Facebook feed? As you can see from the post , I decided to swim against their advice, and "hook" Twitter and Facebook together. Fast forward to 2012, and I'm going to separate the two, at least for a while.

There are a few reasons why I've decided to switch it up.
1) Many more of my friends are now on Twitter than a year ago. That said, while I know all of my Facebook friends, I still only know a fraction of my Twitter followers. What I'm getting at is, my comments are simply going to have a different "take" on the different platforms. I just don't feel comfy Re-Tweeting some Tweets to my friends on Facebook. In short, because of the unfamiliarity of each person's Twitter followers, the Tweets are much more raw than I care to share with my friends on Facebook.

2) Twitter has become mainstream, and in many ways, a more fun place to tap and scroll than Facebook. The Twitter feed has become a more entertaining version of what the Facebook NewsFeed used to be. Too entertaining, perhaps, to gel together.

3) Twitter has become too fast for Facebook to handle. For example, Tweeps all knew Michael Jackson died before Facebook knew Farrah Fawcett passed away (and 12 full hours before my grandaddy knew of either, btw... #NewspaperInHisFrontYardTheNextMorning). Just the other day, Tweeps knew Joe Paterno died before Peter could get to the Pearly Gate. Some of you may wonder why anyone would care about that. Perhaps you wouldn't, but it's a good snapshot of how Twitter works. @LizGReardon hit the nail on the head when she Tweeted something to the effect of, "Being on Twitter is like seeing the future!" Oddly true! All Tweeps knew Osama bin Laden had been killed 20 minutes before everyone else saw the news on TV.

4 ) Play by play sports and political action. EVERY play and EVERY comment of any game/debate is Tweeted and either heralded or blasted by a person's thought. No one would clog their Facebook NewsFeed with this sort of quick, funny, and raw banter. It's FUN, but it's A LOT of banter!

5) When my Facebook friends see that little blue bird icon at the end of a comment that reads something like, "RT @5DayBander rings #POTUS @SOTU @FamouslyHot big time. #scgop #sctweets #teacyber." As you can see, I'm sure not ONE of my family members (other than Jennifer) can read what I just "Re-Tweeted," or have any interest, for that matter. #WhiteNoise #DeafEars

6) There's an app that allows Tweeps to simply type "#fb", that will place selected Tweets to land on Facebook. This way, I/Tweeps can pick and choose with a little more dicipline.

This all said, I'm unhooking Twitter from Facebook this week. Will it affect friends/clients in any way? In no way, whatsoever. It's just a fleeting thought, and a good way for the blog to flow into the weekend.

2012 Shapin' Up To Be An Intense Year!

Thankfully, Amanda and I seem to be carrying over the crazy hustle of 2011, into what's shaping up to be an intense 2012. Earlier tonight, we put the home on 6001 Indian Mound (behind "VA") under contract." With that, we'll have 18 "sides" tagged as pending sales, at a myriad of price levels.

Hopefully we'll keep this pace up until something pops (closes). Buyers and Sellers are anxious to start new chapters in their lives, and we sure try our best to help get them there. The brakes should tap soon on the number, however, as 2501 Craig Rd. in Forest Acres/Druid Hills is scheduled to close on Monday.

To be clear, all our listings don't presently enjoy contracts and have a nice red bow on top. Far from it, actually. All I'm saying is, we hustle and grind every day to procure offers the best we know how and our sales number reflects it.

As I walk by Coldwell Banker Midtown's "sales board" many times a day, as it's just outside our office, I'm privy to what fellow office mates are doing. Given we work at the most productive office in the Midlands, "the board" is a pretty good snapshot of what's going on in our marketplace. What I'm getting at is, there seems to be a good bit going on out there, which is awesome! #ActivityGeneratesActivity

To cap this post off, tonight around 11:00 I found a counter-offer in my inbox. I haven't put the magnifying glass to it yet, but the first glance is showing we're $2,500 apart on price, and $2,500 apart on closing cost assistance from the Seller. Looking at the full picture from a birds eye view, I bet Gold Nugget Point will be #19 by 2ish.

The trick now is to balance the work of "contract to close," while keeping the sales pressure to a maximum. This is where the intensity part begins to boil.

Our Buyers and Sellers do a great job of helping us get to the finish lines, and Amanda and Amy make all this work.

MLS Top Producer 2011 - Thank You!!!!

Friends, Referrals, Hard Work, Hustle & Amanda!
Given that the end of January looms, if I'm going to do it, I need to go ahead and report that thanks to friends, referrals, hustle, and a great partner (Amanda Q. Payne)... this dink blogger once again finished a year as the Midland's Top Producing Realtor, per CMLS. I have to admit, it's humbling to receive congratulatory texts and emails from colleagues and friendly competitors from around our state and industry. Pretty motivating, too

Honestly, the feeling is a little different from last year. Last year was a gigantic personal feat. Really and truly, I never thought being in the position was an option. Like all professions, competing with 20, 30, and 40-year veterans features a certain degree of respect and admiration. Fast forward to today, and the label feels more like pressure than relief. Don't get me wrong, I'm flattered beyond words and humbled more than the keyboard in front of me can convey but it still brings some pressure (maybe that's an ulcer....I dunno). That said, I'm proud and feel compelled to keep raising the (our) bar.

This may seem a little odd, but since we're enjoying the same perspective as 2010, I'm going to take the easy way out and copy last year's thoughts (see below). After all, it's pretty much spot on as it pertains to 2011.

Of Almost 2,000 Members, Proud To Be On The List
As the first week of 2011 progresses, I'm humbled to receive congratulatory phone calls from fellow Realtors, lenders and closing attorneys. After a busy year of networking, marketing and pretty much hustling our tails off, I'm proud to announce that MLS has posted numbers that reflect that this dinky blogger is the top producing residential re-sale Realtor in the Midlands. Exhale...

When I entered this profession, I sent a postcard and an email stating something to the effect of, "As in most sales careers, success will largely depend on friends and referrals..." Fast forward five or six years, I've never written a truer statement.

While the year was lined up to be a big one from the beginning, the single greatest event of 2010 was Amanda Q. Payne joining Coldwell Banker United, Realtors in April. Amanda is a flat out producer, and made the office exponentially more fun. We're a great fit.

There are some big real estate teams in South Carolina, and the Midlands for that matter. Some big production teams are five and 10 people deep. That said, I'm probably most proud of the fact that the we, along with a new mom/work from home Team Manager (Amy Ackerman Cartin), have posted such numbers.

I've touted for a while now that we're the best real estate network in South Carolina. As we all read and constantly hear about the doom and gloom real estate market and world's financial climate, we grind every day to find a way to make things happen.

Is Mitt Toooo Successful Even For GOP?

Tonight on Facebook, my lovely wife posted she's supporting former Governor Mitt Romney to be the Republican nominee for President of the United States. I understand why she's leaning Romney, and it's wasted air to argue just for argument's sake.

What does have me dazed and confused, however, are some of the comments and angles the candidates are taking, and perhaps moreover, what's firing up debate audiences and Republican Tweeps. I suppose I'll give examples in a short list form...

1) Apparently, Mitt Romney is too successful to be the nominee. Before folks can take their thoughts to step #2, they slay him on how much money he's made and how he made it. I just don't get this, especially coming from fired-up R's. I mean, WHO CARES?? As long as he did it legally, good for him. I actually applaud that a wildly successful person may be our leader. Am I missing something?

1a) Romney's tax returns. Last week, I thought it may be a good idea to release his tax returns. Sure, there's going to be a wild amount of "zeros" on there. Also, I'm sure to be envious. Obviously, there will be an offensively small tax rate applied, and/or offshore accounts present. Well, big deal. That's the way the system works at present. Fair? Probably not. Legal? Yes. Steve Jobs, Kobe Bryant, Bill Gates, and Jay-Z are probably in the same tax yacht, and none of them graduated from college. In short, we can get to that tax bracket too, and until someone changes the system, that's that.

Further, he's probably right when he tries to explain how Democrats will absolutely POUND on him if the numbers are published. D's would crucify him on the air, paving a way for the competition to victory. Who knows... but I get what he's saying.

2) Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich has crowds hypnotized. Newt's calm demeanor but pitbull bite on the media is great TV, and pumps the Twitter-sphere. However, this does not make him a "conservative," or "Reagan." I gotta type that Ronald Reagan, if nothing else on this earth, loved his wife to the core of his spirit. Who knows if Newt wanted an "open marriage," but I'm pretty confident cheating and divorce weren't in Reagan's heart. Reagan was loyal to the core to his second wife, Nancy. Jane Wyman was his first wife. The difference between Reagan and Gingrich is that Reagan did not cheat. Jane Wyman even called Reagan a great and honorable man when he died. They supposedly divorced because the death of their infant daughter (she died the day after she was born) proved to be too much for them to handle. This aaaalll said, I understand Newt may not have met a soul mate, as Reagan may have... which may make this unfair. However, those are the punches, aren't they?

Here's a ridiculous, quick, parallel spin: "I'm the Joe Montana of this group. I have two feet, favor my right hand, and run around if I have to in order to get things done, and get paid only because I produce. I was even in the stadium with him a few times while he did great things. I'm Montana-like, because I'm claiming it." With that statement, I can hear my colleagues laughing. Difference is, I don't hear SC Republicans laughing. Conversely, they're gulping it up. Oh well, so goes the political game of defining one's self. Well done Newt, I suppose.

Congressional ethics reports and millions made via positions contrary to his Contract with America well-documented, I'm astounded my Republican friends allow him to keep claiming the "Reagan/conservative" label.

Don't get me wrong, I happen to think Newt has the ability to do colossal things. In the meantime however, one can't just claim Reagan's conservative Yin on one end, when he's really a Yang that Reagan would likely be ashamed of.

Before the political universe leaves the Palmetto State, I wish they'd expand further on the Keystone pipeline, oil shale, and our future with China.

I'm starting to think there are so many debates, and the candidates talk so much about their past while simultaneously stomping each other, that it's become boring. Given this pattern and platform, Newt may have discovered that blowing anything he can find out of the water works pretty well here. I would've assumed SC Republicans were more savvy than to reward this, but perhaps Newt is on to something.

We'll see on Saturday!

GOP Pounded It Out @Myrtle Beach, SC

Last night many of us watched a fiery and entertaining SCGOP debate held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Many of the TV talking heads labeled last night's affair the best yet. Of the debates I've seen, I agree completely. The candidates went at it, and the moderators let them. The crowd was full of hard-core Republicans who were proud to be there, and even prouder that their state was in the national spotlight. Well done, Myrtle Beach and SCGOP.

The theme of the night was to pounce on front-runner, Mitt Romney... and pounce they did. For instance, Santorum had Romney in a steel-spiked trap regarding the voting rights of felons relating to an ad Romney is running. Santorum had him right where he wanted him, and you could see it in the body language. However, just as Santorum was about to throw a knock-out blow, Gov. Perry belted in loudly, interrupting... and stole the moment. It was a lukewarm topic, for sure, but awesome to watch unfold nonetheless.

Newt went off during the entire night, and played to the crowd in large fashion. He oddly but powerfully captures moments, and audiences continue to soak him up.

Ron Paul probably lost votes last night. Meat-eating Republicans don't want to hear his 'Squeeze the Charmin' foreign policy preachings, and when he stated we should all pay a 0% tax rate, that was "it." This might sound good on a microphone to some folks, but it's just not real. It was a, "C'mon, man" moment.

I'd love to throw my spin on the two hours, and would have a big time showcasing some of the VERY funny Tweets that flowed through the feed, but this would lead to an overwhelmingly long post. In short, if you like politics and policy, and a nice spar, last night's debate was good TV.

Did any of the candidates offer anything new? Not really. Conversely, they continued to talk about past accomplishments and pointed out their opponent's failures. Given the gravity of the situation and atmosphere, this was ok, and better than hearing the mind numbing/time wasting, "I'm conservative. I'm more Reagan." This theater was better than that, and I think we're all glad for it.

Oddly, I began this post fully intending to type about Romney's income tax disclosure situation. Oh well!... I suppose this leaves me with another blog opportunity. I'll take it!

Once again... well done, SCGOP. South Carolina was on a national stage last night, and it turned out to be a hit.

Innovation and Hustle Are Good Things

Earlier this week, @Wesley Donehue, was named one of "2011's Top 50 Most Influential People," by Columbia's Business Monthly Magazine. I don't know this for sure, but my gut tells me he was surprised by this, and truly flattered. Admittedly, I forgot to blog about this local accolade. In the meantime, his firm was featured on the CBS Evening News, commenting on South Carolina's (First In The South) Republican primary

Over the last year or so, Wesley's brand has caught fire. He does political work for a spectrum of Republican candidates and provides, in my bias, a top-shelf product for his client list. This is obviously awesome, and his friends are anxious to watch him grow.

Fast forward to the reason for this post, and what award-giving folks are having a hard time projecting, is that he's putting a personal stamp on his profession (innovation, if you will). In short, Wesley is sort of "Blue Ocean'ing" the arena of political consulting. For example, at the time, Tweeting @JimDeMint, @SCGOP, and #sctweets was ahead of the game. Further, he was ahead of the curve w/Vlogging (and getting candidates to Vlog), TwitterBackgrounds.com, and Fundraiser7, among other things. Further still, "PubPolitics" has caught on locally, which I've enjoyed sponsoring a few times (50 bucks for the beer).

Like the real estate industry, the political consulting arena is an imperfect one as the scale slides with every micro-instance. That said, Wesley is doing a big job of what DonehueDirect's tagline proclaims, "We Innovate Politics." His label is spot on with what he's trying to do, and is propelling his brand accordingly.

If you can't tell, this stuff is right up my alley...

GOP PrimeTime Enters South Carolina

Now that Iowa and New Hampshire have come and gone, our South Carolina is now the center of the political universe. If you don't like politics or negative ads, I strongly suggest you unplug every communicative device in your world.

While the negative ads will get as nasty as creative minds (and the law) will allow, the candidates will try to stay positive in person and when on a microphone. While the TV commercials do the dirty work, the positive stump and interviews will consist of two basic topics that they think you want to hear: "Reagan, Reagan, Ronald Reagan, Conservative, Conservative, Conservative... Ronald Reagan, Conservative, I'm like Reagan, I'm Conservative... Conservative... Reagan. Reagan. Reagan." You get the idea.

Reagan. :)

Three thoughts come to mind, and I'll type as if I was talking to the candidates: 1) Stop trying to be someone you're not. When you mention Reagan, again and again, and again and again, you're diluting yourself. How good can you be, when ALL you aspire to be is someone else? 2) You all wanna be the same man! Compounded further, you want to be the same man over and over and over and over and over and over. 3) Since you say the same thing, you're wasting microphone time... and then it's gone. Congratulations, you just said the same thing as the fella beside you.

What I'm getting at is, the use of President Reagan's name has become white noise. The same could be argued about the term "conservative." OK already... we get it! It's going to be interesting one day when a Tea-Partier asks a question on national TV something to the effect of, "President Reagan raised the debt ceiling, raised taxes, and maybe traded a little boom-boom under the table (Ollie North). How do you parallel?"

I kinda think this is why Herman Cain was doing so well. With his 9-9-9 thing, he actually was saying sooooomething, while everyone else just said the same ole', same ole' "I'm conservative like Reagan" thing. I mean seriously, Rick Santorum's sweater vest even got traction because no one is saying anything new.

This all said, I'm well aware I'm not a political consultant. I also understand that when candidates say "Reagan" or "conservative," the dials get a bump in the focus groups. On this one, however, I'm not sure I care. Since they all say the same thing (with the exception of maybe Romney, sometimes), I contend the candidates are wasting microphone time.

It would be awesome if a candidate would shout something like, "I propose we tweak daylight saving's time," or "$5,000,000 commission to the first person that can efficiently find a way to convert oil shale into oil, or salt water into fresh, or make a fail-safe long-lasting battery and change the auto world forever." I dunno, just something.

I'm not sure why I started typing about this. Perhaps it's because I know we're about to get pounded with presidential politics, and hoping we'll have some good days of something more than the same old stuff we've heard for 20+ years.

Like Sen. Lloyd Bentsen calmly told Sen. Dan Quayle in a debate some years ago: "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Well, candidates, you're no Ronald Reagan. Be yourself!!! You might surprise it, and then perhaps you'll be like Reagan.

Columbia's Last HotSheet Of The Year!

Columbia, SC's Newest MLS Listings: December 2011
Thank goodness it's "HotSheet" time!!!, as I apparently broke a little rule with my last post. After the Gamecocks big bowl win, I posted a great photo of Spurrier receiving his victory douse. As no foul was intended, the photographer wasn't thrilled about me using his copyrighted image. That said, he was classy about the situation and asked that it be removed, or I'd be sent a bill. Again, no harm no foul, as I promptly removed the photo. To be sure, it was a great shot of a truly happy team and coach. I'm sure you'll see it around town, or somewhere else on the Internets.

Fast forward to the HotSheet. December's edition includes a good mix of inventory between $150,000 and $300,000. Interestingly, while scrolling through the homes, I noticed Amanda and I represent three of the highest priced listings on December's list (Doesn't matter one bit, but still kinda fun!). Davant Place, Canterbury, and Dandridge are all top shelf properties, and we're proud to market these fine homes.

As we're all a little stir crazy with cabin fever, a few hours Monday afternoon provided big time excitement for South Carolina fans. Pretty much every reader of this blog obviously watched the game, and has seen the comments of Facebook and Twitter so I certainly don't have to recap. That said, the two pics above are probably my favorites of the day.

The first pic came from my friend Pierce's Facebook page. I forgot who he said snapped it, but it captures a lot. The second pic is obviously our Alshon at the end of the first half. This pic is great because it freezes his extra effort, making it look like he's levitating. You may know of some better photos, but my bet is these two will be posterized, and placed somewhere @Williams-Brice.

Thinking back a few years, here's my one thought synopsis of this year's level of bowl play produced by The Gamecocks: Stephen Garcia. Obviously I don't know this for sure, but if you think to the last few bowl games, today's effort was a completely different level. Perhaps Spurrier knew something when he started Connor Shaw at the beginning of the season. Thanks to Connor for bringing a 'gamer' effort!

Impressed BIG TIME with the USC Gamecock Football Team. I haven't checked any stat sheet, but over the last two years, I think we're 8-0 vs UGA, UT, UF, and Clemson. We live with 7 billion people that would have thought that was improbable, impossible, and a down right stupid thought.

Thank you Carolina football for what you've done to this community, our state, and university. What a run...

@Great Friends @Big Time @New Year!

Last night we brought in the New Year with good food, great friends, and a lot of funny hats. As you can tell, pretty much everyone took part in the hat theme. Even though the fellas aren't in the pic above, rest assured we sported big lids too. For instance, I turned Finley's Bumbo upside down, which oddly worked out pretty well.

As we spilled in last nights Shandon's venue, a big time was had by all. Feeling safe and full of laughs, it's tough not to have a big time when around fun people.

Next up? Devour as many collards and black eyed peas as I can throw down. Then, it's Gamecock football time. After that, the "Holiday Season" will be over and it will be time to blow the hinges off of the world of real estate production.

Amanda and I End Year w/ Big Listing

True to our efforts and label, it looks like our 2011 will end with a huge bang, as Amanda and I are set to put this beauty on the market late Wednesday afternoon. Sporting five bedrooms and loads of living space, this home is sure to turn some heads.

Old Columbia Homes Can Punish Wi-Fi

If you know me (or Jennifer), or have read this blog a few times, you're probably aware that before we were married, I purchased a house in the first block of Shandon. It's old, brick, and has a deep footprint, to say the least. Well, it's so long, and has so many bricks, and so many walls filled with concrete and plaster, that our WiFi coverage doesn't extend from back to front. As you can imagine, it's been a constant battle.

Today, we set out to change this problem with a quick trip to BestBuy. As we were all set to purchase another 'booster,' or 'extender,' the salesperson sold me on the supposed fail safe product in the pic above. Given it's an Apple product, I had no problem paying for a product we'd have complete confidence in. Fast forward to 1:44AM, and we're back to a six or seven year old Linksys. Ugh.

To be fair, I'm confident the Apple router is experiencing "User Error." That said, thank you for bearing with me while we mess with technical difficulties.

I'll be back at the office tomorrow with no problems, and hopefully by tomorrow night, our old box of bricks will be glowing with new WiFi.

Nick Rolls Out New Habitat/Realtor Tag

New Design To Grace Car Trunks of REALTORS
The pic above is the president of the South Carolina Association of Realtors, Nick Kremydas, holding up what is sure to be known as "The Realtor Tag." The current version of the tag looks about the same but focuses more on beneficiary of the funds, Habitat For Humanity, instead of the professional organization supporting the cause.

I currently have the more subtle "Realtor/Habitat" flair screwed to my trunk. That said, I'm not sure the new one is for me. I like it well enough, but I'm not sure it hits on the label we try to project. I guess what I'm trying to say is that the new tag may be one step over the salesman(y) line, as opposed to the current "supportive" notion, which I very much prefer. It's a little hard to explain behind a keyboard, but I think you get what I'm trying to say.

At the time of renewal, I'm not sure which tag I'll go with. I do know, however, in the name of sales, and in the effort to fetch the most dollars for a great cause, the association wants to design the most popular tag possible.

Hmmmm, this fleeting thought may have just sold one more tag. We'll see....

Homes In Heathwood & Shandon Fetch Contracts

After a long real estate journey, as of today, the two homes in the pics above are finally Under Contract. One is my listing, and one is not. Nevertheless, there are two "sides" to every real estate transaction, and both have specific merits and challenges.

If you live in downtown Columbia, SC, you're sure to know the top picture as it sits handsomely atop the crossroads of Adger and Berkeley, looking down a Heathwood hill. Pretty cool spot, to be sure. When the flags are blowing, it looks not too unlike my visual of Appomattox Courthouse. That may be a stretch, but you get the idea. Given the location and topography of the lot, it stands tall from the street and is recognizeable by most everyone. All this considered, it's sort of a statement/landmark house.

The second pic above is the cool house in Shandon with the slammin' kitchen. Sloan St. is a very short street off of Burney, which not many folks know about. The buyers of this home endured the everlasting conundrum of; "Do we buy a little more house in Rosewood, or pay a little more to live in Shandon." The couple chose the latter. For Sloan's sake, I'm glad they did!!!

Once again, I hope I'm not jinxing these sales by typing about them. That said, I think it's nice to share some of what's going on in the market, that most of the public doesn't know about.

As a bonus to everyone involved, both properties enjoy "clean" (non-contingent) contracts.

Today was a crazy busy day, and may actually go down as the largest volume day of 2011. I'm not sure of this, but assume it has to be close. This morning, we closed 27 Davant Place in King's Grant, where we represented the buyer and seller (I'll post about this in a few days). At 4:30 this afternoon, we closed a house on Rockwood, which is behind "VA" in 29209.

Nice production numbers and hard work aside, the most memorable part of the day was when about eight of us discussed the note above. The note was written by one of the children of the sellers of "Rockwood,"and found by the child's mom on a shelf in a bathroom medicine cabinet. I mean...how cool (a little bittersweet) is that?

In the hectic hustle of moving one's life (stuff) on a truck, and perform the necessary business side of a real estate transaction, we sometimes forget about what's going on in the heads of the little ones. Should we care? It's a case by case thing, but obviously matters on some level. After all, life happens and moving is part of it. This said, before Jennifer and I had our little girl, Finley, I wouldn't have thought toooOOOoo much about it. Well, for me, it's a clearer picture now.

In all it was a good day. A few "sides" closed, lots of happy people, and a little note to make us all think a little bit.

Ready To Get Back At It. #CabinFever!!

Since I've pretty much been asleep since December 2, I decided to grow my first beard, and have the pic above to show for it. Well...that was fun.

Tomorrow, Jennifer will drive my immobile self to Dr. Willcox's office, where, we hope he'll grant driving privileges. Over the past week, I've been taken aback about how helpless I've been without the ability to drive. As great, cool, and helpful as technology is one still has to eat, do baby chores, and overall get stuff done. In short, my car hasn't been 'crunk up' in over a week, and I'm ready to get back in the saddle at Coldwell Banker-Midtown.

Last night I took a shot and went to a "Toy's For Tots" event, and an awesome 40th birthday party at The Inn at USC. While I can stand, but not sit, I pretty much stood with my back to the wall all night. We had a big time at both parties, and glad we went.

Now that I think about it, I'm more than ready to bust outta here as I think we have a few closings this week, and two listings waiting to be set up. With that, I'm going to pop a few vitamins and a fish oil pill in about 30 seconds. Gotta mend!!

No Driving/Doc's Orders, & This Stuff

In case you've noticed a stall in my online action, it's because I've been down and out via a little surgery last Friday. Again, it's really no big whoop, but it does have me immobile for about a week.

Being home bound is not an easy thing. Most of me very much wants to suck it up and 'get on with the world,' but my brain (and wife) would rather 'get this right,' and not have to do it again.

When the docs and nurses informed me I wouldn't be able to drive for a while, I thought to myself, "This is gonna honk, but OK..." After all, anyone that has a new cavern in their backside is sure to be sore. Yes, I'm hurting and moving makes it worse, but it's just not that. The bigger picture, and what I didn't realize, is that the meds I'm taking work. I mean...THEY WORK, and can understand why patients shouldn't drive or make big decisions while consuming them.

I don't know squat about drugs or medication, but I can type with all authority that these pain meds are effective. Further, I was reminded early in this venture to "Stay ahead of the pain." That's certainly a big deal, to be sure.

#Occupy Palmetto Baptist. Here I Come!

No Drama Intended...Just A Scheduling Heads Up
Friday at noon, I have the distinct displeasure of arriving at Palmetto Baptist Hospital. It's no HUUUGE whoop, but tomorrow I'm finally (hopefully) getting rid of a pesky cyst. If you know me well, you're aware that I've been messing with this thing for almost 20 years. Awful!

Tomorrow, Dr. Hugh Wilcox and his team will knock me out and Doc will put the scalpel to me. In short, I'm about to go through a pretty uncomfy experience. I'm typing about this simply to inform folks that I'm going to be on major pain meds for a couple of days, and immobile (can't drive at all) for almost a week. Grody visual: For a month or so, I'm gonna have a hole in my back an iPhone could fit in. :(

I strategically nestled the surgery between Thanksgiving and Christmas, thinking most folks would be focused on things other than real estate. Conversely, my seemingly clever thoughts backfired, as we are super hot pouring listings in and working about a dozen Pending Contracts. #BUSY!

As we all sit less than four feet from each other, they both know everything...about everything. Midland's Christmas Season Begins @Holiday Market
No matter how early big box retailers put out their blinking green and red displays, many Midlands residents consider the Junior League of Columbia's Holiday Market as the unofficial start to the Christmas season. This year is no different, and tomorrow night is the annual kick-off party.

Wednesday night, over 1,000+ friends will participate in the Junior League's incredibly popular Holiday Market Preview Party. The Preview Party is a big deal for the Holiday Market, and the League itself, as a great deal of money is raised for the League's charitable activities.

As you can tell, I'm a big fan of the Preview Party and the League. I know first hand how many hours are logged, and how hard the women work for the League's various causes. In short, they're a well-run machine that would be the envy of any organization I can think of.

The second pic above is the stack of frosted cups that arrived at Coldwell Banker-Midtown a few days ago. For a few years now, I've had the pleasure of supplying the vessels of drink to all in attendance. I'm happy to do it, and it always seems to be one of my favorite advertising efforts.

Year after year, the Preview Party provides a grand time for all in attendance. That said, I hope to see you all at The Cantey Building at The S.C. Fairgrounds tomorrow night!

Smiling Faces Saturday @Columbia, SC

Before the weekend actually begins, I feel like South Carolinians wonder, "Why did they schedule the USC/Clemson game on Thanksgiving weekend??" Admittedly, I wonder the same thing. On the front end, it feels like a scheduling nightmare, and a huge chore to do the 'family thing,' only to rush towards a stadium on Saturday. Then the weekend begins, and it all works out in big fashion.

As we never really "shut down" our real estate world (we received an offer @ 8:30 tonight. WooHoo!), things were relaxed enough to have a great time this weekend. We did just that.

Columbia, SC was 'packed and jacked' last night, as the Gamecocks welcomed, and soundly defeated, our orange-clad Clemson friends. Before the "Wins" and "Losses" were played out, everyone had a great time in the shadows of Williams-Brice Stadium.

Given the 7:45pm kickoff, it was fun to hear and watch everyone adjust their tailgating habits accordingly. I'm pretty sure I saw no less than seven people look at their watch face, only to be stunned at what time it was. Comments like, "Holy crap, it's only 5:30!???," were being belched all over the place. We sounded old, but battled through it just fine!

What a great day for GamecockNation. Who woulda' ever thought USC would be 10-2, playing in the SEC, without their Heisman candidate for 1/2 the season, and losing their starting 5th year senior QB.

Friendly Competitor Shares A Birthday

For obvious reasons, it's not often I type about my friendly competitors...especially if they work with a competitor's brand. Tonight, however, I was so humbled to be a part of a fellow Realtor's birthday party, I just can't help myself.

This week fellow Realtor, Stephen McCardle, turned 50 years young. To be clear, I had no idea Stephen was even close to 50, as he looks younger than my 38! :

Since I don't have any Realtor friends on the 'birthday blitz' we know as Facebook, I need to start off by saying, "HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!" Second, but more importantly, I need to report how flattered I was to be invited to Stephen's affair. The gorgeous house on Portobello was packed, and the party food was serious. In short, I was ecstatic to be in attendance.

Stephen is a staple of the downtown real estate industry. Although we've never done a deal together, we run into each other quite often. We seem to attend the same Agent Open Houses, which gives us a chance to visit and kick thoughts off of one another. I value his positive attitude and in some facets of the industry, hope to emulate his work ethic. Apparently, Stephen is a beast when it comes to calling/working "Expired" and "Withdrawn" listings.

As most of you know, I usually use my Monday posts to throw out a new HotSheet, a good political/Gamecock diddy, or to feature a good new listing. After all, for whatever reason, Mondays fetch my biggest click count. That said, I was so humbled to be invited to Stephen's birthday party, I simply felt compelled to type a few paragraphs.

Congrats and great job, Stephen McCardle. Now....let's do a deal, friend. We're overdue!!!

BOOM! Contracts X's 3 In King's Grant.

As of tonight, with a deep breath but a big smile, we simultaneously have 3 homes Under Contract in King's Grant. Hoping I'm not typing at the risk of jinxing the transactions, I can't hold back this "first" in my career.

While we seem to have created quite the niche in King's Grant, I can't remember a time when we've had this much going on in this neighborhood. 27 Davant, 24 W. Tombee, and 19 Oakman Ct. are for sale at very different price levels, respectively. That said, they're all great properties with their own special features.

Since we represent one seller and three buyers of this particular list, there will be at least two properties coming to market in the next few days. As a heads up, one will be in Hampton's Ridge, and one is located on King's Grant Drive. Stay tuned for details!

At present, King's Grant has less than 10 active listings for sale. While many buyers think the neighborhood is for buyers in the $600,000+ range, this is not the case. There's actually a pretty wide spectrum to choose from. In short, there's a wide range of product, and we're proud to find the right fit for all who's ready.

This Week Starts A Little Off Routine

As many of you know, it's not often I get thrown off my routine. For instance, it's Sunday night, and I'm typing from a hotel in Tampa, Florida, 500'ish miles from my routine. Yeeesh!!

Last Friday, my brother and I packed up the car and made our way South to a cousin's wedding. As the wedding wasn't until Sunday night, we had plenty of time to make our way to Florida. Given the extra time, we spent the first night in Jacksonville, Fla and enjoyed a stellar view of the river and skyline.

Once we arrived in Tampa, we quickly learned it's a pretty cool city. Since it's our first visit here, however, we're just getting our bearings and not able to take advantage of all Tampa has to offer. Next time we'll know, "what's what." Rest assured, there are plenty of Starbucks stores here!!!

Tomorrow morning, Michael and I will load up and cruise the purple line in the pic above. We'll be back @FamouslyHot, ASAP!!!

Surreal To Think... Been 10 Years Now

Remember 10 years ago? Perhaps you do, maybe you don't. Ten years ago, all the TV stations were covering the awfulness and effects of 9/11. It was also 10 years ago, when Lou Holtz was leading the Gamecocks to a pretty good season, beating the likes of Alabama in a high scoring shootout. I remember details, because it was ten years ago, too, that Kinsey Black Jones was taken.

If you're unfamiliar with her story, Kinsey was struck with breast cancer in her 20's, which later metastasized to her liver during pregancy. We were married 11 months.

Last Sunday, as I usually do this time of year, I cruised to Manning United Methodist to attend service where I've shared a pew with the Blacks since I've known them. As always, I'm glad I made the trip.

After a spell at the Blacks home, Mr. Black and I rode together to the cemetery. As I've posted before, Jennifer and I visit Kinsey's marker at various times during the year. Driving there with a loving father, however, brings about a whole 'nother perspective (especially since I'm now a dad).

As this may be the first time Kinsey's marker has been projected online, please notice the sleek mirror shine, and lack of leaves, debris, or dust. If you've never had your name etched in a cemetery stone, I can report with authority the feeling changes only slightly at 38 years old, as it did at 28. That said, what you see in the pic above, is the devotion of a loving father, as Mr. Black visits and "swiffs" the marker every day he's in the county. Let me let that sink in for a few seconds. To my knowledge, Mr. Black has visited the cemetery every single day... for 10 years.

As another year rolls by, I need to type how fine and strong of a woman & wife Jennifer S. Jones has been. She became part of an extended familial situation, that many folks may not have had any interest in. That said, Jennifer loves the Black family and the feeling is reciprocated exponentially. In short, we've been one big happy family for a few years now. Enter our daughter, Finley S. Jones! :)

As Finley grows older, she's going to know three sets of loving grandparents, in-laws, uncles, aunts, and cousins. She loves all of her Nana's and Papa's, and they flippin' adore her (of course!). Next year, I'm hoping her niece, Elizabeth Black, will attend USC so they can form a fun bond.

Of course, I don't type this post to tug at any one's hearts, or to make anyone sad. I am compelled, however, and feel a sense of responsibility to mention Kinsey's memory. Overly simplified, I just want to remind our friends that... "It's that time of year."

Kinsey would have been 40 yesterday.

It's been a few weeks since a "sexy" house has hit the market in 29205, in the "$300's." On Monday, however, a sharp house on S. Saluda Avenue is poised to fill the void.

Like most months, the October edition of The Hotsheet has a good variety of listings. As usual, Coldwell Banker United - Midtown, enjoys the dominant presence on the list, including the top two price points, (Glenwood Place @ $700K+, and King's Grant @ $646,000).

It should be noted a home on Kennilworth in Heathwood was also new to Columbia's market, but won't be on the link. The house was Under Contract before it hit the MLS, which closed @ $900,000 just a few days ago.

Halloween @King's Grant: Best In Show

No Neighborhood Does Halloween Better Than KG
For the 5th year in a row, Jennifer and I (and now Finley, of course) headed to King's Grant to spend Halloween night with some of our best buds. I mean... why not!? IMO, the King's Grant neighborhood provides the biggest and best Halloween experience in Columbia, and perhaps all of South Carolina.

I can never seem to snap a picture that does the excitement justice. All I can tell you is that it all starts off with a mob-style pizza party followed by several hay rides, smoke-filled doorways, dozens of golf carts clogging up cul-de-sacs, adult treats served in cups, hundreds of costumed little ones of all ages, and hundreds of adults having almost as much fun.

As I report about KG's Halloween being an all-out blast, this year I get to bring into it my own personal daddy fun. At two'ish years old, this was the first time Finley was able to get into the action. I gotta say, our little ladybug hung right in there with the big kids and didn't miss a trick, or a treat. I had so much fun walking with her from door to door and watching her say "Shann'ku!" (thank you) dozens of times. Moreover, I learned tonight that riding through the woods on a cold, dark night with your two-year-old girl is absolutely over-the-top fun. Like many of you have told me before, "It's the little things, Franklin." I'm getting it now...

All sugary-syrup daddy-ness aside, tonight was one of the best few hours I've had with our little girl. It was an all-out, top-shelf adventure. The hugs, expressions, and comments were the stuff that make dads melt. Thanks to all the folks in this great neighborhood who put on such a show.

18 Foot Point @ King's Grant Is Now For Sale

A few days ago, we had the pleasure of putting King's Grant's newest listing on Columbia's latest MLS Hotsheet. I'm sure glad about it, too, as all our other inventory in the neighborhood has sold.

As we've represented some great product in King's Grant this year, I'm not sure they've been on as popular of a street as Foot Point Rd. Further, 18 Foot Point is part of the stretch of lots that back up to the thick, wooded area of Fort Jackson.

"Foot Point" has many things to offer, including 5 or 6 big bedrooms, an open floor plan, and soaring ceilings. "Foot Point's" kitchen opens nicely into the great room, which flows into a large screened porch, which is perfect for entertaining.

As nice as many of the homes in King's Grant are, the two things that set this one apart are lot location and the oasis backyard... complete with a pool! I'm not sure of the percentage of homeowners that have a pool, but from experience I feel like the number is pretty low. In short, this is a pretty primo feature that's compounded exponentially given the privacy of the lot.

Knowledge/Teamwork = Happy Friends

In the world of residential real estate sales, days like today are pretty tough to beat. It's not often when we get to watch a transaction come full circle, then, via networking, teamwork, and loyalty, loop around again.

Consider this. Our awesome friends and clients, pictured above (obviously), purchased a home from my team manager, Amy, and I a few years ago. Fast forwarding to 2011, a few weeks ago, we facilitated the listing and sale of the same Cannon St. (Shandon) home. Fast forward to today... Seth and Anna purchased a house Amanda and I listed, not too many blocks away.

Wait, there's more. Amanda and I listed and sold the same house a few months ago to a contractor/builder client, who with the help & vision from Anna, produced the polished home we closed on today. In Realtor speak, that's seven real estate "sides."

To be clear, I'm not typing to boast about the real estate transaction sides or the volume. The reason for this post is to illustrate how unreal the power that client loyalty, market knowledge/info, and teamwork can produce. If any of these three facets weren't present, Seth and Anna would still be looking for a house, and would therefore have missed the opportunity to sell theirs.

Congratulations to Seth and Anna Rose, Evan Wilson, Amanda, and Amy, all the way around. Today was a perfect microcosm of how buying and selling can work in today's real estate world.

P.S. Seth is the County Councilman for much of 29205. If you don't know him, or have his email or # on hand, give us a call and we'll get it to you. He wouldn't have it any other way!

P.S.S. In her time away from the pharmacy, Anna's taste and touch has transformed an otherwise great house, to magazine level. #Impressed

Starbucks is the best at a lot of things, including packaging nourishment to a milk-less home on the way to a little girl's school house.

Finley and I would like to thank the incredibly-skilled Garner's Ferry Rd. Starbucks Barrista for serving up this perfectly-chilled, tall, no shot, no room, no squirt, no sprinkle, double spun, classic, quin-double shot cup of milk.

While in the parking lot, Finley helped pour the contents in the pic above into an opaque pink & blue sippy-cup. The little things are the best things.

Foot Point @ King's Grant, Hits Market

Monday morning, we'll place another beautiful home on Columbia's MLS Hotsheet. The address is 18 Foot Point, and is sure to hit the market with fun anticipation.

If you haven't noticed, there haven't been a lot of $500,000+ product to hit Columbia's real estate market in the last few weeks. To be quite frank about it, I'm not sure why....but that's ok. That said, I'm proud to introduce another King's Grant home to Columbia's marketplace.

Oddly, for the first time in 4ish years, I'm out of King's Grant inventory. Your first reaction may be, "... Must be the ecomomy." I can understand this initial reaction. However, it's quite the contrary. Instead of typing the pharse, "Out of inventory," perhaps I should have typed "Sold Out!" :-)

I'm not sure about this, but 2011 may be my best year in the popular neighborhood. So far, we've recorded five "sides" in King's Grant. Not too shabby! Hopefully 18 Foot Point will be #6 and/or #7.

Shandon Sales Have Really Cranked Up

I'm not sure what's going on with this, but Amanda and I are going gang busters in Shandon right now. For instance, we were only a few hours away from having three homes on Wilmot Avenue Under Contract, simultaneously.

Fast forward one week, two of the three homes pictured above have Closed, with the top pic (the cedar-shake house) ready for inspections Friday afternoon.

Today we had the pleasure of closing 4243 Wilmot Ave. (the one with the red door). After battling through some issues with the closing/occupation date, our Seller worked hard to 'make it happen.' After all was said and done, the property is in pristine condition, and ready for the new happy owner.

Since the beginning of 2011, Amanda and I have really racked it up in Shandon, almost oddly so. Our action on Wilmot Ave. has become a fun micro illustration of our 'Shandon run.'

As many of you know, in real estate, "You're only as good as your last sale." This said, it's up to us to keep this roll going in the popular 29205 neighborhood.

Sales numbers notwithstanding, we love Shandon, and all it has to offer. Looking forward, we're determined to keep the pressure up, and keep our buyers and sellers churning the best we know how.

O-Fensive E-Fence...Now On D-Fence.

While I haven't had too much time for the news this week, I feel compelled to type on something that caught my ear this morning on "Morning Joe, and kept popping up throughout the day.

What's the big whoop, you ask? Herman Cain's idea/joke to put a fence between the Texas - Mexican border.

Let me be clear. I don't pretend to be any expert regarding immigration, or border control. Further, I don't pretend to be a fence expert, either.

Disclaimers disclosed,... I'm not sure what the big deal is.

The other day, at a campaign stop in Tennessee, Cain said, “We’re going to have a real fence. 20 feet high with barbed wire. Electrified. With a sign on the other side that says, ‘It can kill you!’ ”

If it's the "...kill you," part, I can understand how that may be pretty rough talk. But let's think about this. If the sign says it, in English and Spanish, whether true or not, shouldn't it be taken seriously, and therefore the point? I mean, is the stupid fence supposed to keep folks out or not? If no, should we just erect a picket fence? If this is the case, will an illegal alien build the fence, and whitewash it, too? I mean, really....

Since all the hubub of an apparently slow news week, Mr. Cain has attempted to spin his fence thoughts as, "a joke."

Bu-dump, bump, for Mr. Cain...on both ends. Instead of saying, "It was a joke," Mr. Cain probably should have said something more on the lines of, "I'm sorry for the way that came out. I just want to build a strong and effective fence."

I mean really, is a fence supposed to properly work, or not? I can see where the sign should read, "DANGER" or, "KEEP OUT," or, "COULD CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY." Further thinking on the subject, but given our litigious society an, "It Can Kill You" sign, protects the U.S. on the front end from someone, or another government from filing suit against the United States. Kidding here, but wouldn't that be the ultimate disclaimer...??

Again, I'm certainly not weighing in on any immigration issue. I'm simply putting a thought out there whereby if someone builds a fence, should it work as intended, or should it just be a symbolic diplomatic gesture?

Really and trully, how effective is this plan, anyway? All folks have to do is put a heavy rock on the gas pedal of a massive bulldozer to wreak havoc on any fence. Or, further, just set up a 20' "A" ladder, and take a nice hop to 'freedom.' Further still, for convenience sake, why not just roll up a nice shiny 22' escalator...?

In short, C'mon Man...

USC Can Still Do It. Lattimore Would...

Gamecocks Can Rally Around Loss of Superstar
Around 2:30ish, while I was holding an Open House @ my listing on Kilbourne Rd., a visitor shared the news about Marcus Lattimore being lost for the remainder of USC's football season. My first reaction was, "Holy crap. Wow, the air just let out of this city." Second reaction: "I wonder how he's taking it." While I didn't mean anything terrible by the order of my thoughts, I felt a little guilty about it.

That said, given the statement from Lattimore's family, I think the young man's going to be OK. I also think the Gamecocks still have a chance to grab the precious SEC East title. Now that the Gamecocks have gotten this far, and lost to Auburn anyway, USC still continues to hold its own future, with only UGA nipping at our heels. Given that UT and UF are having down years, and the Gators forced to play under the Sandstorm @ Williams-Brice, USC can pick up the needed "W's." We'll see.

I have no idea where the pic above derived. My best guess is it's from the running back's days in high school. I chose it because it's a good illustration of what's to come for USC's young hero. Further, it's a pretty good illustration that major college sports isn't just showing up, putting on a slick Under Armour uniform, and running really fast while 84,000 fans chant your name. It's hard work, and crazy preparation. Marcus Lattimore is about to go through major preparation, and I just felt like the pic shows he's up for it.

I don't mean to post this for negative purposes. Quite the contrary, in fact. Carolina football has major athletic talent, and can slick & power through this setback, if they decide to.

Either way, we'll be @ Williams-Brice...or a parking lot near by.

Stephen Garcia's Carnival Is Over @ USC

If you live in Columbia, SC, you're well aware that the South Carolina State Fair is rolling into town. What you didn't know was coming, however, was a more bizarre and wacky sideshow from the guys that perform across the street @ Williams-Brice.

Today, GamecockNation was all abuzz about the video of Coach Spurrier calling out (w/o actually calling out) Ron Morris of The State Newspaper for fabricating the news and being an overall poop on Spurrier's program. In all of this, Spurrier walked out on his own presser... twice.

Eclipsing the Spurrier vs. Morris affair, however, was the dismissal of 5th year senior Gamecock quarterback, Stephen Garcia. The quarterback was stripped of his duties as a football player for failing an alcohol and/or drug test. Unfortunately for Garcia, the alcohol/drug test came not long after the fella lost his grandfather, threw a crazy number of interceptions on national TV, was blamed for the loss to Auburn (1st loss of this season), and lost the starting job he won (back) in USC's first game.

The moment the news regarding Garcia was announced, the Twittersphere and Facebook went nut balls. In the name of space and time, I cherry picked a couple of Tweets. While I don't think either of them are perfect statements, I have to admit to having shared these fleeting thoughts:

@5daybender @USCMark2001 bottom line is big time programs don't have these shenanigans in the middle of the season #embarrassed
@ToddKincannon @fitsnews And you know, some guys need liquor and whores to succeed. Tiger. Joe Namath. Maybe Garcia's in that category.

When it comes to flat out quarterbacking, Garcia leaves USC as #3 all time for yards and completions. He'll leave #2 in the "WIN" category, with 20 (I think these stats are correct).

Years ago, I blogged that Garcia was the man for the job. At the time, Beecher and Smelley just didn't have the spark or spunk that Garcia seemed to have. Turns out, that was right. Also turns out that there's just a little too much off-field spunk to mess with.

Godspeed, Stephen Garcia. Nice wins, 5+ suspensions, terrible bowl performances, and an unreal 2010 season dot your legacy at Carolina. As you connect the dots moving forward, we all hope you'll represent your Alma mater well in future endeavors.

Now that USC's #1 sideshow has exited the tent, the State Fair can get back to providing Columbia with the bizarre and weird stuff. The Gamecocks in the meantime, hopefully, can get back to X's, O's, and W's.

A Fella Named Steve Changed Our Times

As much of the world publicly acknowledges the life/death of Steve Jobs, most of them immediately associate him with the impressive and superior products of iPad and iPhone. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's incorrect to think this. iPads and iPhones are the devices in millions of hands right now. If you take a few steps back, however, it is even more impressive to think of all this man did and how he changed the world.

For instance, take a good look at the picture above. Think back to the first time you held a floppy disk in your hand. Remember DOS? Remember when we had to punch the arrow buttons on the keyboard to get anywhere on the computer screen? Now, take a look at pic again and notice the "mice," and reflect on how much we are on the computer each day.

Jobs didn't just change the computer industry. His iTunes/iPod blew up the music industry and and all the components that go with it, like Henry Ford vaporized the stagecoach of the transportation industry.

Fast forward to the iPhone and iPad. Really and truly, I challenge anyone to find a more superior product in any product category. Cars, shoes, watches, finger nail clippers, sandwich meat, or whatever you can think of, there are few products/brands that are so far ahead of others (in their prime) in their respective categories. Jordan, Tiger, Federer, and Starbucks come to mind. Premium & superlative; Apple.

As I posted before, I fought and fought the idea of joining the iWorld, when in the end, I purchased an iPhone. For some reason, I acted as though Apple was equal to Darth Vader. Stupe on my part.

I like to describe the iPhone as a tight, smooth, brilliant machine with a screen that looks like a rainbow of chrome, with a little melted butter on top to fluidly swipe and pinch. It's just that fine of a product.

To get back to the point, the man in the pic above changed the world more than once. I mean, how impressive is that? Who knows how the world would operate today without this man's vision and work.

We can't help but ask ourselves, "What could be next after things that are as cool as an iPad??" Who knows. Time travel? Traveling hologrammed clones? Maybe Finley and her friends will do a little morphing? We'll see!

In the meantime, however, we're able to perform and experience the coolest and most mind-blowing things because of a fella named Steve, and his Apple.

Florida GOP Is Diluting Itself.....IMO

In an effort to feel more important, Florida Republicans are desperately trying to move ahead of South Carolina, as the 'First in the South' primary date. If you're even a little "political," you know that the great state of Florida is attempting to 'move up' its Republican event to a January date.

On the surface, this seems like a perfect marketing/PR move. Breaking the thin layer of the shiny grapefruit, however, exposes the bitter taste of what's really there.

1) In politics, a week is a lifetime. Think of it. One segment on Meet The Press, Newt Gingrich is "done." Michelle Bachmann won the front-runner position after the Iowa Straw Poll, and presently doesn't matter (and neither does the Iowa Straw Poll). Today, front-runner Rick Perry has been exposed for having a hunt club/camp (or whatever it is) named something pretty terrible. To be sure, a shift is on the way.

The stock market, Congressional climate, entire American economy, oil/gold prices, and everything else in the world can change, change back, and change back again in a few months time. In short, the candidates and the world around them, and how they react to the world, are continually evolving. That said, while the world rotates, Florida's votes will have been cast, with old news being the factor.

2) Florida holds a beastly amount of votes. While Florida jostles to be first, it does so at the peril of half their power. The RNC has threatened to strip Florida of half their votes if they decide to go against Party rules. Apparently, Florida R's don't care.

3) This seems to be an example of, "It's more about us, not country." Am I too naive or sanctimonious to think everyone else doesn't do it? No. I'm simply saying this is another example of it. Doesn't feel very Tea Party'ish.

Sure, the candidates, their staff, and the press will flock to the Florida sunshine and spend money on hamburgers, vodka, and hotel rooms. That said, these folks will come and go in swift fashion and then forget about Boca, Orlando, and Tallahassee. Will it be worth it? For an economy as big as Florida's, I don't think so. In my bias, Florida would be better served swinging its elbows in the heat of the campaign, not on the front end only to be forgotten about.

Being a South Carolinian, I may be typing with a little bias. With this in mind, I have to remind folks that South Carolina is a better microcosm of the true South, with far less electoral power. The difference between Florida being first, and South Carolina being first, is an entirely different thing. Florida being first is a waste of Florida's population power, especially with the penalty coming from the RNC (50%). Conversely, it's a big deal for the Palmetto State.

So brothers and sisters of Florida, you want to break rank and be first? Go ahead. Have fun for a couple of weeks. Have fun, too, being irrelevant for the rest of the primary season.

Daddy/Daughter Night With My Girl

As Jennifer took a mini vacation to Greenville, SC, with her mom tonight, Finley and I found ourselves on a daddy/daughter night. While we miss Mommy terribly, Finley and I had fun breaking the regularly scheduled program.

After scooping Finley up from school, we went straight to preview the house on Woodland Drive that was reduced to $399,000 today. I needed to go in, and glad we did, because now Finley and I know this particular house isn't a good fit for our buyer clients.

After the house preview, we cruised around the corner to Heathwood Park. Living in Shandon, we usually rotate between the three parks that surround the house (Emily-Douglas, Sims, and Hollywood/Rose Hill). I thought she'd like a new scene, which we both enjoyed. We found ourselves among folks we've never met before, which was fun to watch.

After some swinging, and saying "Hold On Tight!" at the top of a sliding board, we went straight to Casa Linda for a little Mexican cuisine. Finley's favorite item by far is the salsa.

Realizing I was operating on borrowed time, we scampered home, only to find ourselves wading in a baby pool full of rain water.

After a little Barney... BOOM. Nite, nite time.

I had a fantastic daddy/daughter night with my girl, and I think she enjoyed it, too. I'm already anxious for what tomorrow morning brings. Her first word will prolly be, "Mommy?" :)

If you ever cruise down Devereaux Rd., in Heathwood, you're sure to know the house in the pic above. It's a memorable home by any measure, as it has an estate like setting, and sprawl across its vast property lines.

If you've ridden down this Heathwood strip lately, or see this property often, hopefully you've noticed a difference in the street view. Last week, we had a lawn man jerk greenery and shave foliage in large fashion. The difference is exponential, as the entire front facade has been altered.

On Friday, we put this super cute cottage feeling home on Columbia's real estate market. 4243 Wilmot Ave., located in the Shandon/Sherwood Forest area of town, enjoys the primo 29205 location of many others, but offers a completely different interior flavor.

Secretary's Tax Rate is Perfect Spin Job

If you open your laptop to any news website, or turn on your TV to any 6:30pm news channel, or follow a bunch of cable news "talking heads" on Twitter, you're sure to have heard about The President's Plan or Economic Growth and Deficit Reduction. Love it or hate it, it's what's going on in Washington, DC right now, and Republicans and Democrats are dealing with it how they may.

In this initiative, President Obama is using a capitalistic American hero as an incredibly popular prop. Given that Warren Buffet feels the uber rich need to be taxed more, I'd use it too. I think they're calling it "The Buffett Rule."

Within this prop however, is a very compelling illustration. An illustration so perfect, that, when I read it, made me let go of my mouse and throw a few comments Amanda's way. I suppose it's all over the place now, but on page 46 of Obama's report, he exclaims, "As Warren Buffet has pointed out, his effective tax rate is lower than his secretary's." BOOM. Perfect illustration to prove a point.

Thinking a few steps further, however, reveals that things aren't as simple as the quote may hope. First, Buffet's taxes are a red hot rich mess. He's wrapped up in investments, which are taxed at a lower rate than income (Remember, the President is talking "rate" only). Second, Social Security somehow plays into his rate.

Moving along, here's my bigger thought regarding the secretary illustration. How many jobs does Warren Buffett supply? For simplistic reasons, let's say 10. If Buffett supplies 10 American jobs that receive W-2s, who pays the taxes? I suppose the short answer is that the employees do. I mean, after all, it is taken out of their paycheck.

Well, actually, it seems to me Buffett pays the taxes. Here's the rub. The taxes exist, only because a job opportunity exists (and is placed). In short, the job comes first, which is at the pleasure and opportunity born from Mr. Buffett. Sure, a tax rate may come before the job, but no one pays "tax rates." Taxes are paid, for a job a person is employed in and performs, at a rate. Taxes are paid, not tax rates.

No doubt, I'm not a tax expert. Far from it, actually. Further, I'm not a "hater," as exemplified by previous posts. No one wants the President to succeed more than me. Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama... Let's go! I'm an American, just like you.

This all said, the kabillionaire vs. secretary tax rate seemed like the perfect microcosm of what's wrong with our tax system. After all, it'll probably be a VERY effective "play" with the casual voter. Who knows, that may be the point...

Why did I post a pic of the young Warren Buffet, you ask? I can't help but wonder if the Buffett above would preach the same message we're hearing from the billionaire of today. Yesterday's Buffet had cleats on his wingtips, hustling and hoping someone would listen. Today's Buffett could wear Umbros and a Michael Jackson zipper jacket, and people would listen. Point? It's a little different once you've made it.

Massive Parking Shift @ Williams-Brice

This year's edition of Gamecock football is stacked with game changers. One off field game changer, no doubt, will be the addition of 3,000+ parking spots in what used to be the S.C. Farmer's Market.

USC enjoys an "off campus" stadium, which makes for some all day, all out tailgating. The dynamics of gameday parking has altered dramatically since I was in school ('91-'95).

For instance, "Greek Life" used to park at Tally Ho!, which was a dirt lot where Seawell's now sits. Then came the era whereby thousands of fans actually purchased spots (own a deed/pay taxes on) for $5,000 - $50,000, depending on the team's success and proximty to the stadium. It was during this phase when four luxury condo complexes changed the industrial, concrete landscape forever.

Fast forward to a shift of 3,000 tailgate spots on the Bluff Rd. side of Williams-Brice. Ultimately, this project will cost upwards of $30,500,000. This map shows you the layout and pricing, as I understand it. This link presents the game day parking info, including the Farmer's Market. Notice charcoal grills are prohibited @ The Farmer's Market, while gas grills are allowed.

If I'm not in Anderson, SC visiting our mom, I'll be on the opposite side of the stadium from the new facility, splitting time between The Lizard's Thicket corporate office, and hanging with friends at The Coop.

No matter where you park your Yukon or minivan, we all want the same two things; Have a good time, and leave each respective parking spot with a Gamecock win, only to do it again another day.

Shandon Cream Puff Coming To Market

It's not on the market yet, but this Shandon bungalow will be available any day now. We haven't quite taken all of the photos yet, and don't have a link for you to click. Still, I wanted to introduce it for those who may know of someone looking in Shandon.

I'll keep this short as to be able to give a full description when I have links, etc. That said, this is an absolute slammin', "cream puff" of a Shandon bungalow. The seller has done some awesome things in this house. So much so, in fact, that it was on Shandon's "Tour of Homes" a couple of years ago.

The first example I'll share is the master bath. The master bath is probably as good as a classic bunglow can possibly offer. It's well thought out, cleverly finished, and going to make someone very happy.

I'll post a more detailed description with pictures in the next few days. In the meantime, tell your friends or forward this to a friend who wants to live in the popular Shandon neighborhood. The home will be offered in the low $300,000's.

"The Duplex," in Anderson: Fun Home

My brother, Michael, and I decided Sunday would be a good time to head to Anderson, SC, and visit mom while she's in the hospital. For now, I'll refrain from typing about moms condition. I'll report, however, she's one tough human, and that she's battling and recovering from a plethora of some very painful conditions.

On the way back to Columbia, I asked Michael if he minded if we rode by, "the duplex." The duplex, as I refer to it, is 1124 Springdale Rd. This is where we grew up.

As Michael trolled down the hill of Springdale Rd., I asked him to slow down, where we eventually came to a stop. As I raised my iPhone to snap a pic, we joked that I probably looked like a foreclosure agent, or an appraiser and may get a bat to the head from a confused owner. Still, we stopped, and I got out of the car to take a few more pictures.

This was a great house to grow up in, to be sure. While we didn't have hardwoods, granite tops, or even the wonders of air conditioning, we had a lot of memorable moments. The more I look at the picture above, I can't help but remember my friend Randy Heritage (sadly, deceased) and I coating that big ars deck with Thompson's Water Seal. Ugh!! That was not a good weekend! Twenty+ years later, it's a great memory.

I have no idea why I stood in the road so long to reminisce about our days on Springdale. Perhaps because I now have a two year old, and sought to recreate it...or "better" it? Who knows? I'm sure my brother was thinking, "What is he doing??" Either way, I'm glad we cruised by the old duplex, as it served as a fine HOME for the four/five of us.

Next step?....."Provisional Year" (PY), at USC. More fun times!

What does this have to do with a real estate blog, or our practice? Not much, I suppose. This said, "The duplex" is part of what we did this weekend, and sticking in my head...so I thought I'd type about it.

P.S. Mom is experiencing some difficulities, and in terrible pain. However, she's recovering the best she can...

Video Trailer Debut Has Created Crazy Stir
When I viewed the trailer of 1536 Tanglewood Rd., in Heathwood, I knew we had something special. That said, the video is enjoying such a buzz, that I need to leave the subject matter at the top of the blog for a little longer.

Even though the product may not be completely finished (may need to add a shot of the owner's suite, and back patio), I had so many ants in my pants to show someone, that I put it on Facebook. Obviously, I'm glad of it.

What I didn't expect, was for Amanda to throw it on her Facebook Wall this afternoon. I'm ecstatic she did, but in doing so she exposed it to a fresh set of eyes, including hundreds of REALTORS.

What I'm getting at is, I need to let the link marinate a little while longer. If you can't tell, I'm beaming at the reaction the project is getting. :)

It's fun to be ahead of the curve on things like blogging or QR Codes, but it's something else to raise a bar into a flat out game changer, and bounce a whole new product category. My new video partner may have blasted out the best real estate video on the East Coast.

And to think.... this is our first go at it! I can't wait to expand on the possibilities. It shows better (bigger), if you click the link instead of the actual video above.

Having A Big Time With Video Project

For a good while now, I've tinkered with the thought of incorporating video into some of our inventory. Sure, we have "Virtual Tours," which certainly have an impact in the overall marketing effort.

Truth be typed, I haven't taken video to the next level because I haven't been impressed with many of the finished products out there.

I quickly learned that making good video takes a good videographer (duh). Expanding on this, all videographers are not the same! In searching for local talent, I embarrassingly admit to having watched scores of wedding videos in the middle of the night looking for the right person to approach about our little project. I mean, where else would you know to look for videographers, other than trolling wedding videos on Google??? Hence, my wedding scout time.

After what seemed to be a million minutes of searching, I finally found who seems to be a perfect fit for what I was trying to accomplish. When this husband/wife team learned about the upbeat-tempo, time-lapse vision of what I was looking for, they put their flavor on it and produced a game changing product.

Anyway, I'm not sure our movie trailer of "Tanglewood" is quite finished, and I'm pretty sure the seller hasn't seen any of it yet. In my bias, however, it's good enough in its current state to leapfrog everything 10-fold in our marketplace today.

I don't want to overdo it, but I think you'll like our product well enough to tell your friends about how we do things, and about our brand of real estate. I'm proud of this new product/project we've added to our practice. Just before we left for the Domincan Republic, two more of our proud listings fetched contracts. WoOHoO!!

The first pic above is 2824 Wilmot Ave. It's a Shandon cutie that has a lot going for it. The home sits in the heart of Shandon, only a few blocks away from award winning Hand Middle School. This Wilmot house has loads of Shandon "charm," like a cute front porch, and transoms throughout. I'm sure other Shandon bungalow sellers will be curious as to why this house sold so fast over others, which I'll save for another post.

1446 Kathwood Dr. actually has a line of buyers. I knew it was only a matter of time before this house "popped," as it just has too much to offer at a "reasonable" price. Located in popular Lake Katherine, it sports four bedrooms, a bonus room, a two car garage, feeds into Brennen Elem. School, and sits on a great corner.

Birthday vacations notwithstanding, Amanda and I have been busy. These two are great additions to "the board," and we look forward to a smooth closing for both. I'm chomping at the bit to put the coveted red "Pending Contract" riders on top of the signs, but Amanda keeps tapping my brakes until inspections are completed. WAA-WAAaahhh..... :|

Happy Birthday Jennifer, @ Punta Cana

I haven't posted in a while, and for good reason. Last Wednesday afternoon, six of us woke up early and made our way to Dominican Republic's Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to celebrate Jennifer's 40th birthday.

To get to the resort, we had to fly around a still developing Hurricane Irene. The flight was a little bumpy, but we made it, albeit about five hours late. No matter.

I can't express how big this joint is. From what I could tell, the place offers over 2,000 rooms. BIG rooms, with a hot tub in the center of each one. There are pools everywhere, of every shape and size. The casino rivals many that Vegas offers, and the spa... Oooh, the spa.

The beach is wide and expansive with soft powder sand, which of course led to clear, cool water (Not blue... but clear water, which was Jennifer's only prerequisite when planning for the trip).

I have to admit, I was impressed. Is it a 5 Star, 5 Diamond venue? Perhaps not, but it's not supposed to be. This is an all-out, all-inclusive, fun-filled, never-run-out-of-anything-to-do place to relax, at your own personal pace.

I can't reiterate enough the sheer size of, well, everything. Many of the restaurants were as big as I've ever seen. The spa seemed endless (and I only saw the boys side, of course). The bedrooms were ginormo, complete with bathrooms that would make anyone want one in their home. The shower felt more like a car wash. So good.

I'll post more pics later, but so far I've been ordered by our fellow travelers to hold back, and can't poach off our our Shutterfly account (I can't remember my dang password). The pics above are off of my phone.

In all, it was a great trip. From breakfast, beach, pools, spa, & "casino time," I'd go back to Hard Rock-Punta Cana anytime.

Happy Birthday Weekend For My Girl

This weekend, my real estate world stood still as all the attention turned to my sweet girl. It's pretty unfathomable to think, but Finley S. Jones turned two years old today. As Landon Denemark taught me to say, ....WoWeE!!

Having a few parents/in-laws feeling less than 100%, we found ourselves making a whirlwind tour of Upstate, South Carolina. The photo above is at our "Mimi's" home in Anderson, SC. As you can plainly see, this was a fancy affair. Linen napkins, heirloom silver, and a large centerpiece were sweet touches. Antique bowls were filled to the brim with dippin' sauces, while chicken nuggets were plated next to crustless olive finger sandwiches. Everything was well thought out, and, well... pretty yummy.

For the first two years, Finley has been not too far from perfect. As many of my friends have heard (prolly more than once)... she's slept through the night since birth; she prefers broccoli and brussell sprouts to cookies or ice cream; she says "Peeeze," "Tan'kooo," and "Wa'kom,"; doesn't pop her knuckles; and doesn't cuss.

As you can imagine, I can't say enough about our first years with Finley. I can't wait to take her to her little schoolhouse in the morning, as we begin another year together. #LoveMyGirl :)

Good Buds Get New Gigs At Statehouse

If you know me or read this blog much, you're aware that I keep up with much of the business going on up the street at the Capitol building. Partisan politics notwithstanding, many of my good friends work in the political industry.

Yesterday, the Senate side of the building had a staff shakeup, whereas two of my good buds will enjoy new roles within the SC Senate Republican Caucus. I can't type anything more accurate than the paragraphs below, so I'll yield to http://www.scsenategop.com for the details.

Good for these fellas on their new gigs. They do a good job, and I'm sure Sen. Peeler (R-Cherokee) is pumped about his new caucus lineup.

From what I understand, political innovator Wesley Donehue will continue to do what he does @scsenategop.com .

COLUMBIA, SC – August 17, 2011 – Mark Harmon will take over as Executive Director of the South Carolina Senate Republican Caucus. Prior to this position, he served as the Caucus Research Director for the past six years. He is replacing Lisa Manini-Sox who served in this position for the past 10 years.

During his time as Research Director, Mark worked on several important pieces of legislation, the most recent of which include Tort Reform, Voter ID, Card Check, and Reform of the Unemployment System. He has worked hard at advancing many important conservative issues and will continue to do so as the Executive Director.

“I want to thank Majority Leader Peeler for bringing me onto his staff nearly six years ago, and also for allowing me the opportunity to take on this new challenge. The past six legislative sessions I spent working in the South Carolina Senate as Majority Research Director have been nothing short of rewarding. My goal was simply to do everything within my abilities to help the members help the people of our state by enacting the most commonsense and conservative laws. In my new role as Executive Director, I intend to continue pursuing an agenda to make South Carolina prosper, while also working to build upon the Republican majority in the Senate,” said Mark Harmon.

The goal of the Executive Director is to help expand the Republican majority in the Senate. Mark will help the caucus raise funds for reelection and work with all the Republican Senators to have a unified direction for each legislative session.

Ben Twilley has been named Mark Harmon’s replacement as the Majority Research Director. Ben will be tasked with researching and forming conservative legislation to help get our state’s economy moving again. He currently serves as a budget analyst for the House Ways and Means Committee. He previously worked for the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. Ben is from Graniteville and he graduated from the University of South Carolina.

“It is going to take creative ideas to get our economy back on track,” Peeler said. “Ben understands South Carolina’s business climate and the impact big government and high spending have on our economy. I know he will help our Senators draft good conservative bills to spur economic growth.”

2 Druid Hills Listings Under Contract

Recently, Amanda and I put two Druid Hills homes on the market. As of this week, both of these houses on well-traveled Harrison Rd. are SOLD. :)

The first pic is a sneak of the interior of 3120 Harrison Rd. I don't have a link tonight, as it has already been taken off most of the national websites. Nevertheless, you can tell from the pic (check out that granite slab!) that this house was "done right."

The 2nd pic, 3204 Harrison Rd., has its own attractive features. My favorite part of this listing is the property itself. It's a big corner lot, with loads of concrete (some covered), that translates into good outdoor entertaining space.

Every now and then I'm approached by folks that are under the impression that we don't want to list homes under the $250,000 range. This is not the case... and these two properties are prime examples of this.

Both of these Harrison Rd. listings received the same treatment and exposure on the national websites (Realtor.com, Zillow.com, Homes.com, ColdwellBanker.com, etc.) that any Heathwood, Shandon, Lake Katherine, Forest Acres, or King's Grant home enjoys. We pay handsome sums to maximize all of our listings, no matter their price point. In short, we're volume Realtors and want to move property for our clients, period.

Bachmann Found Some Forest Among The Trees
A few days ago, some folks with not much else to do at the time, watched the Republican debate on FoxNews. I recognize that admitting I watched, may throw me into a new category of political nerd. I don't mind.

Nerd or not, what I watched was a entertaining, enlightening, and fun. In my opinion, these candidates went "after it" with truthful, thought out answers they really believed in. In short, they laid themselves out there and were willing to let the chips fall where they may.

Do I agree with what they said? Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot, and sometimes...not much. That said, it was refreshing to watch candidates actually shoot from their respective hips, instead of dance around every question with tape recorder ready rhetoric.

At this point, I don't see her winning the nomination, but I don't ever mind giving credit where it's due. If nothing else, Rep. Michele Bachmann can answer a question. To be sure, she swatted off a peppering all week long. She's obviously doing well, considering many Americans think she's got some crazy behind her eyes. So far, however, she's not having to defend her photos with, "I'm crazy for America," or, "I'm possessed about America's future." In short, she won the straw poll, and did pretty well on NBC's "Meet The Press," too.

Kudos given, I feel like Rep. Bachmann should change her stump tag line of, "We... can... make.....Obama...a one...terrrm....Pres-i--diiiiint. It's simple(minded), kinda uninspiring, boring, and a camera opportunity time sucker. To me, this is five to 10(depending on no-duh applause) seconds of dumbed down time.

Who knows what will happen in the near future. I do know, given this debate, it will be fun to watch our presidential process unfold.

Call me a nerd, or call me engaged. Either way, I'm into it!

King's Grant: Closing & Under Contract

After much effort and strategery, we're about to sell our latest King's Grant listing. Actually, tomorrow is a pretty big day for us, and the neighborhood. Sometime before lunch, 23 Huspah Ln. will finally close, and 19 W. Tombee will officially be Under Contract. WOoHoO!!!

When these two homes officially pop, we'll start fresh in the neighborhood as all our inventory will have sold.

To be clear, the prices/ft aren't breaking any records. That said, the "price points" are respectable given the present real estate arena, and today's financial world. In short, sold is "sold," and "not sold" is, well....you get the idea. Let me put it this way: Our sellers are happy.

Having to start typing late tonight, I'll keep this short and expand on these two properties later. In the meantime, know that we're hitting this market with guns blazing...at all price levels.

Palmetto Losing Good One To Lone Star

After an incredibly hot listing appointment in Forest Acres/Forest Lake (hitting market tomorrow, btw!), I tightened my tie knot a little and made my way to hang out with some good friends at a pretty cool place.

Tonight, Governor Haley graciously hosted a farewell party/reception for a friend we both introduce as, "This is one of my best friends: Eleanor." Although I couldn't stay long (no babysitter), I was flattered to be included, and glad I went.

Eleanor is leaving South Carolina to serve as Governor Rick Perry's (R - Texas) Director of Insurance. A big job, to be sure.

Eleanor is accustomed to and seasoned for such a position. She has owned and operated Driver's Choice Insurance, one of South Carolina's largest insurance agencies. Further, Eleanor served as Director of Insurance under Gov. Mark Sanford (R - SC), and most recently led South Carolina's Budget & Control Board, the nerve center of the our state government. Further still, Eleanor is the latest recipient of The Order Of The Palmetto, South Carolina's highest honor. Gov. Haley presented the award tonight. #goodmoment

Gauging from tonight's attendance, she'll be missed by a lot of folks. Eleanor has been a proactive player in private, corporate, and public life. This all said, she's secured a stellar job, and best of all, her grandchildren are in Texas. As many of you can imagine, the "grandchildren" thing seals the deal.

I hope she visits Columbia soon and often. I'm proud to know Eleanor, and a better person for it. She would've served our Palmetto State well, as a grand Lt. Governor.

If you know me, you're aware that I'm a big fan of the King's Grant neighborhood. Good Times w/ Friends In Charlotte, NC

Tonight, 10 friends cruised up the map to the Verizon Amphitheater in Charlotte, NC. First and foremost, lets get clear on one thing: it was hot.

Second, the reason I'm using the pic above is because by the time I got everything straight with work, my phone's battery was done. With no phone, I couldn't take any pics so I swiped this pic from Facebook of Townes and her new striped twinkie/bestie. If you're wondering, that's the lead singer from TRAIN... not her husband Stephen.

Other than it being dripping hot, it was a good show. TRAIN came out first, and got the crowd goin' pretty good. I have to admit, if a member of TRAIN hit me in the melon with a can of Red Bull, I wouldn't know who they were. I know so little, in fact, that when a friend emailed a joke about "Meet Virginia" earlier today, I didn't get it at all... until they sang the pretty popular tune. Have to admit, felt like a stupe.

Maroon 5 came out next. My knowledge of the group is about the same as TRAIN, although I did recognize more of TRAIN's stuff. Either way, Maroon 5 was good, too. Both lead singers were pretty entertaining.

Charlotte's Verizon Amphitheater is an impressive venue. Of course it was hot tonight, but this place is clean and sports individual seating with wide aisles, a large common area to hang out and eat/drink in, and ample parking just across the street. Obviously, I have no idea what an amphitheater like this would cost to build, but this model would be a pretty cool addition to Columbia, SC.

It was a great show, and a great time was had by all. Even though it's late, I'm glad we returned tonight because waking up in a hotel room on a weeknight so close to the office (but so far away), may put me over the edge.

Given all the "tree flap" going on in Shandon right now, there are dozens of questions popping up about a plethora of issues. "Can they bury the power lines?" "How can we stop them?" "Why does an out of state company have the contract to cut trees in Columbia, SC???"

One Facebook user (who happens to be a friend and client of mine) posed this question: "Does anyone know if there is a way to estimate any loss in property values - either for the neighborhood overall or for individual streets or properties? We're on Woodrow and I think anyone can agree that we got it worse than most streets. I feel sure any buyer would choose a comparable house located on another street in the neighborhood based on what happened yesterday." GREAT QUESTION!!

My late night quick answer to her post: "Neighbor!! I think it's great that you're so active on this page!! As far as property values go, you're good to go! I see what you're getting at, to be sure. That said, your property value shouldn't diminish (or rise) b/c of the pruning... an appraiser isn't going to give a credit or a debit to a tree trimming. As far as procuring a buyer is concerned, it will be an "eye of the beholder" thing (like any other property). Sure, someone may comment, "Well, snap... that house has a funny looking oak", but that won't come into play when "comps" are pulled. What I'm getting at is, some folks may care, and some won't... but it won't mess with the pure "value" of your house. Keep doing what we talked about, and you should be good. You have a great house, on a popular street, in a top shelf neighborhood! See you in 5 Points!"

Good for this Woodrow St. homeowner for being concerned about the value of her property, and the questionable direct hit an unsolicited, altered landscape may procure. I'll stick with my answer, but the short of it is... while the buyer pool may diminish ever so slightly (1 folk, maybe, in a world of averages), an appraiser is going to look at cold hard neighborhood comps (adjusted accordingly, if necessary) to get the value.

Just FYI for interested readers, the home she's typing about is a classic Shandon brick bungalow in the middle of Shandon, about two blocks from Hand Middle School. Primo!... complete with a pruned oak and power... via SCE&G.

Shandon, SC 29205 Is Fired Up Over Tree Debacle

If you live in downtown Columbia, SC, chances are you've heard screams coming out of the historical Shandon neighborhood. Scream 1: The chainsaws and wood chip machines going full bore. Scream 2: The trees that are being sliced without regard to, well... anything. Scream 3: The Shandon residents watching their neighborhood landscape get transformed by a government contract.

No doubt, there are two sides and many explanations for what's going on. Thoughts and arguments range from "They're killing the trees!", "My whole property looks different now!", "We need power, tree lover!", to "What is a Texas tree company doing with this contract?!". All thoughts, to be sure.

Given all that is going on, this post could get pretty long. That said, I should mention the drum beat of the neighborhood has halted the carving for a day while a meeting takes place tomorrow at 11 to discuss the issue.

Whether you care about this or not, I need to mention that our elected officials and some other Shandon lovers/activists have really stepped up on this. Mary Greene, Carla Moore, Tina Cundari, Seth Rose, Belinda Gergel, James Smith and John Courson, et al, have at very least stalled the action for a day so folks can get a good grip of what is actually going on.

I've heard of a few plans of action. One stall tactic is for residents to park their cars on the curbs, to give the tree cutters an obstacle to deal with. More radical plans are to file a lawsuit, let the air out of the truck tires, and/or start asking for green cards (the green card thing would be a whole 'nother boondoggle, for sure). Most are waiting to see how the meeting goes tomorrow to react accordingly.

Quick Trip To Charleston, Is So Easy

I haven't posted in a while, but a least I have a good reason (or two). Late Friday afternoon, Jen and I packed the backseat, and cruised down I-26 to spend the weekend in Charleston, SC. As you can understand, this is reason #1 in itself.

On Saturday, while my fellow male travelers played golf at Charleston National, I decided to "lay low" and stroll the streets of Charleston. Truth told, I'm in desperate need of a new round of white dress shirts, so I volunteered to hang back and do the shopping thing.

Saturday night we found ourselves at "Water's Edge," @ Shem Creek. Umm, mine was good, and that is about all I have to say about that. Happy and full, we kicked the can down the creek from establishment to establishment finding long lost friends along the way. A good time was had by all.

For Columbia residents, a trip to Charleston is almost too easy. While Jen and I don't seem to go enough, I hope we'll step it up a notch or two over the next few years.

So what is the second reason I haven't blogged? You won't believe it, but the home we stayed in wouldn't hook into our wireless accounts. The family has never had "cable" either, so perhaps there's a direct correlation. I dunno.

Either way, it was a fun weekend in Charleston.

Google+ : Coming To A Screen Near You

After a couple of years of having BIG FUN on Facebook and Twitter, I've had the good fortune of being "invited," to what may be the next big thing. Thank you, Elza!

Some folks are hesitant, and even critical about Google+ getting in the social networking game. Bloggers, etc., are asking questions like, "Why now?" or "Why would anyone want to spend time starting with ZERO friends, when I have 500 somewhere else??" These are certainly good questions, and I understand their crux.

My first few minutes on the new site was ho-hum, to say the least. After clicking around a while longer, I began to get more engaged. Google+ has introduced new social terms like "Circles," "Hangouts," and "Huddle." After I understood what each of these terms were getting at, my experience actually became fun. Moreover, once I entered more engaging "Circles," Google+ quickly became pretty cool.

After a few days of giving Google+ a chance, I understand differences between it, and other social sites. Actually, Google+ is, "A lot of Facebook, with a twist of Twitter", all Googled into one.

Using the quote in the last paragraph as a guage, Google+ feels a little smoother than Facbook, but the basic setup is the same. As most of you know, the "NewsFeed" is the unintended star of Facebook. In contrast, the front end focus of Google+ seems to be the "Stream"....and so far, it streams like warm butta'.

I may be missing the mark on this, but Google+ feels like Twitter"+", too. Obviously, the 140 character thing is blown out of the water, but the focus on the Stream makes Google+ a news blip bonanza. The reason I feel like it is "Twitter+," is because the necessity to click a "twitpic," "yfrog," or "tinybit" link, to dive further into someones "Tweet." All the info is right there, for your viewing pleasure. Further still, Google+ gives more multi-lateral options (unlike Facebooks more bi-lateral function) to participate in a "Circle."

Will Google+ replace Facebook? Probably not. This said, it certainly has a place, especially given that Google+ doesn't have to start from scratch, like Facebook did. I mean, seriously, Google knows where I am right now, and where I'll be tomorrow. Really and truly, Google can wirelessly thump me in the head, start my car, and change a dirty Finley diaper if they want to. This power is, well....powerful. As far as the, "Why would I start at ZERO dilemma is concerned, I'm pretty sure there is already a way to morph Facebook friends to Google+...once Google opens it up to the general population, of course.

In all, like Facebook and Twitter, Google+ was uncomfy for a few minutes. However, taking it back a few years, for instance, I'm the dummy who was answering other folks questions on my own wall, until someone told me I was doing it (Facebook) wrong. Further, using "@" on Twitter took some getting used to, before I got it right. What I'm getting at is, once I get the full "hang" of Google+, it'll be informative and fun.

My prediction is Google+ will be a social networking monster by default. One day, terms like "Circle," "Hangout," and "Huddle," will become as mainstream as, "Status," "Wall," and "Super-Poke."

Since it is late, I'll wrap it up. In short.... get ready. On some level, Google+ is on the way to your laptop.

Busy As Ever, Amanda Returns Monday

The other night (late night) I posted on Facebook, "CRAZY, hectic week. Still not done. Amanda Quick Payne returns tomorrow...WOoHoO!" I couldn't have typed with more emphasis.

Some friends think I post this kind of thing for marketing purposes, or to project a clever illusion that I'm a busy Realtor. Here's the real rub. In a few days, for the first time in my career, we could have 20 'sides' "Pending Contract." As of Monday, our white board is sporting 17, with three sides currently playing the sometimes eternal game of counter-offer, ping pong.

To be sure, this is an anomaly. Usually, real estate closings happen with a little more tempo than our current scenario. That said, given the current lending environment, we have to get through this production storm, while also servicing our active listings and current buyer clients.

The above pics are a few examples of what is currently Under Contract. While I'm happy to "pull" midnight+ hours of paperwork and emails, it'll be nice to have Superstar, Amanda Q. Payne, back in action from quality family time at the beach.

We're always striving to find a more perfect system, and now that Amanda is back, it is time to ramp up the volume again. We wouldn't be the team we are, without covering for each other through crazy times, and this is certainly one of them.

Not Surprising, Crazy American Verdict

After watching a few Casey Anthony snippets on TV Monday night, I put my iPhone down and said to Jennifer, "Looks like Anthony is going to get off." My sweet wife kindly said back, "What are you talking about?" My simple response,"I'm tellin' ya. Watch this." Thankfully, the conversations ended, as Jennifer was about to fume.

If you were on earth Tuesday, you noticed (or took part in) the public fury, as the verdict of the Casey Anthony trial was announced. Facebook and Twitter went stupid crazy, as the biggest courtroom upset since the O.J. boondoggle, unfolded in front of millions of eyes. My friends were stunned, and they showed it via their keyboards.

Here's the thing. The prosecutors couldn't put the case in a box, and wrap it up tight. Further, the defense attorney had a good enough answer, (however vague) for EVERYTHING...to keep the jury thinking and guessing. He had an answer for everything, including: Searcher tampered skull with stick, MOM typed "chlorophyll" on computer, Casey partied nasty b/c that's how some people grieve, dad made her a liar because of childhood sex stuff, NO DNA on duct tape.

Did a ghost place duct tape on the mouth of the deceased? Of course not!! Well....Hmm....well...ummmmmmm......I don't think so, anyway. I guuuuess not. Hmmm. Well, crap. Did one?

Does a bear crud in the woods? NOOOPE! He cruds on the ground. Well, where's the ground? Zoo? Road? Park ranger throw it in a Hardee's parking lot? Hmmm. Well, you get the idea.

Did the defense cheat? I'm not a judge or lawyer, so I don't know. I do know, however, that Baez created a room of smoke and mirrors. While the jurors were looking one way (death/murder), he created a fireworks show in another direction, in the form of childhood sexual abuse.

The defense did this so well, in fact, that he made it tolerable for the accused to lie. Actually, he made it such that lies didn't matter, as this is what his client was, "trained to do."

The lies became so accepted, that I'm not even sure why folks had to, "raise their right hands." I mean, really. Why even go through this motion? This is another flaw in the system, by the way. Folks putting their hands on a bible, and raising their right hands doesn't mean squat to a person staring down death row. Surely, the rationale is they'll just make it up with their Maker, when it comes to that.

Getting back to the subject, the prosecutors just couldn't wrap it up tightly enough. That said, when it comes to jury verdicts, nothing should surprise the public. For instance, it wasn't too long ago when our own Attorney General couldn't send away a person that had a dug out kidnapping dungeon/pit on their property.

Anyway, I'm not comfy writing about this, at all. Every time the image of that sweet two year old is on the TV screen, I want to take the flat side of a canoe paddle to someones forehead. That said, I'm not surprised by the verdict.

Consider this. Of all the Facebook and Twitter rant banter, I haven't seen one lawyer post a thought. Maybe I've missed something, but I can only think that they're immune to this sort of verdict/judgement, and not surprised either.

Here's the salt in the rub. Casey Anthony with probably sign a book deal, and cut a movie opportunity, and for a while...become a millionaire.

P.S. Don't be surprised if Jose Baez and Casey Anthony end up together...as a couple. I don't know squat, but with these two, be ready for anything.

Fun, Laid Back Holiday With Friends

While much of our population celebrated the 4th on the coast, downtown Columbia, SC, was a very sleepy town. Given that our favorite beaches are only a couple of hours away, I can't blame those who traveled one bit. That said, we had a big time celebrating the long weekend right here.

Coincidentally, my birthday fits in nicely the day before the 4th. What does this mean?? Not tooo much, other than I got to sleep late, watch the Wimbledon Finals, play a set of tennis in beat down heat, and grab an extra Sunday nap. Perfect day? Could be!

Facebook added to the birthday experience, in a big way. Now that I carry an iPhone, the amount of "alerts" was overwhelming. It was buzzing so rapidly that I slept with it under my chest, as to not wake Jennifer. Why didn't I turn it off, you ask? Not sure... but that's how it went down. #stupe

In all, this weekend was awesome. We celebrated Sunday at the Hairston residence (kid pic above), with ribs and fireworks and then again tonight with burgers and friends at the King's Grant pool, which was packed with kids.

We all love the beach on the holidays, and can't get there enough. That said, it's fun too, to kick up, lay low and enjoy a lazy weekend with family and friends.

Ravenous USC Defense Defends Title

After watching what has taken place on ESPN the last few nights, I'm entirely impressed with a particular athletic team. Admittedly, it may be more than simple bias that spending four awesome years at USC, and living only blocks from campus has something to do with it. That said, anyone paying attention is surely impressed by this group.

While the University of South Carolina's big win tonight was awesome, it is how they arrived to this point that has our heads shaking. Game after game, inning after inning, the Gamecocks were only inches, and seconds away from defeat. Instead, USC's defense kept opposing runners from touching home plate.

The Texas A&M game was great, but the second game versus UVA, and the first game against UF (last night) included "all time" type endings, for any sporting event. Viewers witnessed ravenous, lock down, stupid good, clawing, off the tank axle, TV highlight late inning defensive baseball, which kept USC alive under stratospheric pressure. To the amazement of everyone, they kept on...and by the thinnest of margins, won game after game.

As I sit here I can't type into words what this group has done. Their actions on the field have made thousands/millions jump around living rooms, and yell at TV's like freshmen full of BUSCH Light.

Congratulations to Columbia, SC, the State of South Carolina, and Gamecock Nation. Carolina baseball has done it again.

A Bit Much, Of A Dancing Carpet Pad

On Saturday around 1:00, we decided to get in the car and travel to Covington, GA for a 5:00 wedding. We were just late enough to miss the actual ceremony, sit in the parking lot for a few minutes, before entering the reception. It was a nice affair, and I'm glad we went.

I'm well aware, most of my friends have had kids longer than Finley has been with us, and they know cartoons and musical programs, all too well. That said, I'm officially freeking, "Barney'd Out."

Three hours to Covington on Saturday, two+ hours to Anderson, and two more hours back to Columbia on Sunday, is seven hours of this big piece of purple carpet padding. During the trip, our car stereo wasn't on one time. Of course, two or three hours in the hotel room Saturday night.....Barney. Sunday mornings that used to be filled with, "Meet The Press" and "This Week"....Barney.

After a long weekend of giving hugs and visiting with loved ones, we returned to Columbia around 8ish. Tonight, with fresh pajamas, a new bot-bot in tow, we set up for pre-bed family time with, you got it....Barney.

Why Can't You Eat The Dumb Cake???

So I was pumping gas yesterday, when a thought popped in my head bone. It's not an earth shattering, huge whoop, or anything like that. It's an issue, however, because I hear it, and actually say it quite often. That said, where's the dang logic behind the line, "You can't have your cake, and eat it too." Lemme let that sit in for a second...

I mean, what in the world? If someone gives you a damn cake, what are you supposed to do with the thing? Are you supposed to toss it in the closest sewer pipe? Put it in your garage? Throw it in your grandma's front yard? I mean, someone tell me what to do with a my stupid cake.

Giving this a shot... try to substitute "cake" with any noun, like a TV or tennis ball. "Hey fella... you can't have that tennis ball and use it too." Umm.

Even if taken to the divine maximum test of WWJD, it's still outta' whack. Even Jesus, I would think, if given a cake, would only think to eat that cake.

Since I do hear it all the time, I decided to give 10 seconds of research to the matter. Turns out, the phrase should be flipped to read, "You can't eat your cake, and have it too." Get it? If you eat it, you obviously won't have the cake anymore. I guess somewhere down the grapevine of American lingo, the phrase has been reversed and mangled. Either way, the manner it's used in 2011 doesn't make a lick of sense... although pretty much everyone just goes with it.

I usually don't announce homes that are potentially coming to the market until they're actually "listed." On this one, however, since we're only one or two steps away, I thought I'd go ahead and put it out there.

An extra bonus to living in "Lake Katherine" is that you can join the pool/tennis facility on Quail Lane. Obviously, this is a pretty sweet perk if you have kids, like to tan, or bang tennis balls with friends.

Two More Sellers, Now Solid Buyers

Given that we all must endure the 'Negative Nancy' real estate stats, it's nice to be able to report some good stuff.

As I've typed many times before, if a home is priced correctly and is "move in ready," it has a chance of procuring a contract. To be sure, said contract may not come fast enough for a seller's liking, and the number may not be perfect, but if the house is a solid product and the Realtor is active enough, it has a shot.

Congrats to the two homes above. Both are Under Contract, and currently in the inspection phase of a typical real estate transaction.

Most downtown folks will recognize the top photo, as it's located at the corner of Devereaux Rd. and Maiden, in Heathwood. As you might imagine, I had great fun applying the red "Pending Contract" rider today to the Coldwell Banker sign. :)

6319 Saye Cut (the second pic) is a good looking, move in ready house, in the popular Old Woodlands neighborhood. As attractive as the exterior is, the best part of this home is probably the downstairs owners suite, and the fact that it sports four true bedrooms. For the money, this is a goodie.

Congrats to the sellers of these two houses. Again, it took solid products, fair prices, and open minded sellers to get these done.

Now, guess what? They need somewhere to go!!! This week, I'll be on the hunt for some more Midlands sellers. Can't wait!

SC's Premiere Affair Has Title Sponsor

I learned from FitsNews, that RBC has stepped up to be the Title Sponsor of our beloved "Heritage" golf tournament. FITS does a good job of writing about the good news. Congrats to The Heritage, Hilton Head, South Carolinians and Gov. Nikki Haley. I'm not sure of the details, but on the surface it seems like a win/win for all involved. Now we can focus on luring to premiere names, like Tiger and Phil, to "our" event.

Truth told, I was hoping Tag-Heuer would step up to the plate. Given "TAG's" focus on luxury time products, Tiger Woods, and competition sailing (Hilton Head), I've long thought "TAG" would be the perfect brand for South Carolina's premiere affair.

Although RBC doesn't have a presence in South Carolina the likes of Bank of America, Wells-Fargo, or NBSC, I'm glad they're making this big investment in our state. Professionally, I can report positive, if not grand, experiences with RBC. Many of my buyers have used RBC's mortgage products to purchase homes in the Midlands.

Well done, and thank you... RBC.

They Can't Recreate Michael Jordan

I don't know the official stats, but I have to think the NBA hasn't been the same since Michael Jordan retired. No question, the media, along with the NBA itself, has tried incredibly hard to pump up current talent like Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, and Dwayne Wade to lure fans back to the days of Jordan. That's their job, and they do a fine job.

The attempts continue to fall short, however, because the delusional ultimate rivalry is between today's greatest players and Michael Jordan. Tonight's game between the Mavericks and the Heat delivered the same result. As fun as the series was to watch, most of us watched a/the "Next" (Lebron James) Michael Jordan, get blown off of the debate.

Here's the rub. Michael Jordan, night after night, took over basketball games. The man had ice in his veins. Not only did he have ice in his veins, he could change the flavor of his ice during a game. Whether it was dunking, fade away jumpers, defense, ref manipulation, coaching, bullying, staring, free throws, etc., he rose to the occasion and womped opponents. Conversely, not only did Lebron not do these things (any of them), he appeared not to want the basketball... in the NBA finals of a basketballing game... of basketball. #withmillionswatching

All around, some of this comparison stuff is unfair, due to timing and cable TV. For instance, Jordan was able to recreate the whole "game." Not just the "game" of basketball, but the game of marketing and P.R., as well. Jordan came along in parallel with Nike and Gatorade, and they made each other brands for all time.

Jordan did things, night in and night out, that had never been seen before. Its argued that Jordan put the Harlem Globetrotters out of business. I mean, after all, with Jordan on TV, folks could see amazing things on a nightly basis.

No doubt, I'm biased. However, I was rooting for Lebron to do something awesome for the world to see. Instead, he stood on the perimeter looking like a scary decoy for others to get something done. Didn't work. In short, Jordan made things happen. If he couldn't "make" something happen, he did anything and everything he could to "will" it to happen. Conversely, Lebron "hoped" and/or "watched,"...really hard.

Free throws, are a whole 'nother subject. Jordan made free throws. "."

As great as Lebron James is at the game of basketball, this NBA Finals has pretty much put the Jordan comparisons to bed. As fair or as unfair as it may be, LeBron could win 4, 5 or 6 rings, but his heart/win legacy now has a ding. Michael Jordan's heart of ice, and competitive spirit ...has no dings.

In the past two weeks, we've probably listed 7 homes in downtown Columbia. I fully intended to blog about three or four of them in tonight's blog, but pulled back when I remembered the pics of the kitchen on Sloan St. in Shandon.
